My family is moving back to Australia next year, and after much consideration we decided that our lovely dog could not stay behind, he has to come with. Australian quarantine rules state that pets can not be directly imported from Thailand, they must be resident in another country for at least 6 months, then they can be imported into Australia. So I'm considering flying my dog to Malaysia and getting the required vaccinations, chip, tests, etc.

Now -- hypothetically -- my dog could immediately return to stay with us in Thailand for the next 6 months, and then we can all fly home to Australia via Malaysia, stopping to get final tests and shots and paperwork. Such a scheme is definitely not within the letter of the Aussie law, however 6 months in a Malaysian kennel, followed by the mandatory 30 days in an Aussie kennel, would be sheer torture for our poor dog! I would argue that our dog is far healthier here in our home than many of the dogs I've seen in Malaysia.

I'm not saying I will go ahead with this, but the dog is definitely coming back home to Australia with us, somehow.

So my questions are: Has anyone has ever tried this particular plan before, and had success? Are there any obstacles which might cause the plan to fail? Lastly, does anyone know any alternate ways I could bring my dog back to Australia?

Hi, I don't think your plan will work. I went to Malaysia for some dog sgows: you needed to fill in export papers from Thailand and import permits to go into malaysia: needed vaccinations according to their bylaws. For the dogshow they lifted quarantine requirements for entry to Malaysia but normally it is 2 weeks from Thailand. The same reversed process was required to bring the dog back into Thailand: I even had to pay import duty on my dog....we were only away for 3 days!

A friend imported a Shitzu from Singapore: had to have rabies vaccination in Singapore then some titer tests ( to make sure the vaccination had taken) within certain time frame. Then there was 1 month quarantine in Sydney.

Another option is to find a foster home in USA or Canada for 6 months: no special requirements coming from Thailand as long as the dog shows current rabies certificate . Then there is one month quarantine in Sydney the same way.

Either way costs will be substantial. But a familymember is worth it..if you can afford it.

Good luck

Discussion of illegal activities is against forum rules and there is a reason Australia has strict quarantine rules. So unless you want to discuss a legal way to import your dog I see no reason to keep this thread open.

PM me if you feel you can keep this legal and I will re-open
