3Bb Or Tot?!

Featured Replies

Just setting up a house now. Things change, from what I remember TOT's been pretty bad in the past.

Can people comment on the quality of TOT or 3BB now, as in the past few weeks specifically for Koh samui.

Comments/help/suggestions greatly appreciated...

We're with TOT and have only just got back online - the internet was down for a day and a half - phoned the call centre and they said it was being fixed... not sure why it takes so long

CAT fibre optic is great if you can get it in your area. Bit pricier but well worth it.

Cheers.

I live near soi reggae, i am useing 3bb pay about 2100 THB a month, every time we have a power cut / flood problem the internet is off as well (i have a upc and a genny) which is totally bullshit, my neighbour on tot and a genny no problems....

bit tired of this shit so just bought a new modem in which i can plug 2 telefone lines and the make 1 combined internet out, if both up (nearly) double the speed, if one down still have the other...

probably depends on the area u live as well i guess...

Between TOT and 3BB, price/package and ultimately reliability wise choose 3BB, I have had both at several locations and 3BB always performs better, granted its not fantastic by any standard. But much better than TOT.

CAT Hinet is better than either, including 3BB Premium (both the old 2/1 and newer 2.5k pm package), however there is still contention and whilst you see the guys string a copper cable sometimes upto 1km it is still exactly the same infrastructure in terms of wiring as TOT and 3BB in regards to the "last mile" (the bit that connects your house to something meaningful) as their DSLAMs are less concentrated (e.g. Boathouse Choeng Mon) etc... Funny when you read people think they've had a dedicated fibre optic circuit ringed up to them for 2.7k a month (i believe it cheaper at 1.72k now). As far as Im aware there is no last mile fibre to any properties on samui at the moment, including the Lamai IT center, so again be careful what you believe :)

If TOT or 3BB go 3BB. If 3BB Premium or Cat hinet go CAT Hinet (the lower end domestic CAT package aren't available Samui or at least aren't offered so it is CAT Premium as a base).

For my sins im on TOT now. :bah:

When you say you combined 2 telephone lines to make 1 combined output, are you using the same ISP or combining say 3BB and TOT? Did you get the modem on Samui? I'll be living slightly out of Chaweng...

I have a few lines available to me, so I'm getting TOT and 3BB installed now, I thought about CAT, but I was under the impression that CAT was similar to an aircard, is that just another option they offer, ie; they also use a phone line, etc?

Thanks a ton for the info and answers guys, really appreciated and it's helping me out a lot.

Cheers

Happy to inform you that you now know of one residence that has a fibre optic connection straight into the house.

10 mb download (Speedtest.net) actually get a Speedtest reading of only approx 6 mb if pinging to San Francisco. Pretty good though.

Cost approx 1500 baht per month. Upgradeable to 30 mb at much higher monthly cost.

Be careful what you believe!

Cheers.

nod, are you sure its fibre to the home and not ADSL2+? What router model do they provide? I stand corrected if thats the case :o . But 1500 sounds very cheap, and of course you will have contention with other users at the exchange.

Leon, yes typical CAT HiNet installations are ADSL or some variant of SDSL for 2mbit up/down one. so its essentially a phone line, although I dont believe the dialing incoming/outgoing services are activated.

Yes sure Dev. It's pretty good too. Rock solid so far ( since late last Nov. ) Stayed on through all recent floods and only went off for two days after they put the electric posts back up! Will check modem model for you later if it's of real interest. I put my own routers in out of choice.

Price is as stated, with option to pay more for faster download if required. The line they sent up can serve 64 users but it's only me at the moment.

Hi Vlietje.

My system is not hinet. HiNet uses normal copper lines. I think it's known as something like Onnet.

Cheers.

Nod, how far as you from the ring road? Presumably even stricter requirements for this than HiNet?

Installation price? Contract length?

I have not got a clue what the requirements are for HiNet or even what the requirements are for what I've got, so I can't help you there I'm afraid.

I am a long way from the ring road up on a mountain and I paid for one year in advance.

Best bet would be to give them a ring or call in at Nathon office regarding this service.

Cheers.
