I am an Australian (and British) Citizen. My Thai wife has applied for and been granted an Australian tourist visa (Class 676). Relevant (to this discussion) conditions on the visa are: date of last arrival 14 March 2012, multiple entry, permitted to remain for 6 months stay from date of each entry. There is no condition '8503 – No Further Stay'.

She is currently in Australia, staying with me at my house with her two young adult daughters who are on study visas. Her first 6 month period (180 days?) will conclude on 11 september 2011. She wants to continue to stay in Australia after that date, until her daughters complete their study - their visas are current until 16 January 2012.

Her (our) choice then seems to be:

Depart and re-enter. I would travel with her as she is not a confident traveller. Depart to where? (i) Another post advised that Vanavatu would issue visa on arrival for Thai passport holders. I guess that as an Australian I could also obtain a visa on arrival. (ii) Thailand (or other ASIAN countries allowing visa free entry). (iii) What are the other reasonable alternatives for me to consider in terms of time/effort of obtaining visas and cost of travel?

Apply for an extension of stay. What might be the requirements in that application?

Thanks in advance.

I went to Fiji with my Thai wife who had the same visa as yours.

From what you have said, she can enter upto the 14/3/2012....and stay for 6 months, her first 6 months ends on the 11/9/11.

If she goes out of Oz say on the 10/9/11 and returns say on the 15/9/11 she can stay in Oz until 14/3/12, well past the daughters visa end dates. As she has a multi entry visa, a new visa is not required for re entry while this visa is active and it doesnt matter she re enters from.

Thanks for the replies.

Fiji was a pleasant place to visit when I was last there and I will consider that option if departure is necessary.

I assumed by "extension of stay" that a new departure date could be set, rather than making application for a fresh visa as suggested by gburns57au.

I will check with Australian immigration if extension is possible given the specific conditions which have been attached to the visa.

I believe that an extension is not possible on the current visa unless there are extenuating circumstances such as a sudden illness that would affect travel.

I did not suggest that a fresh application for a visa be applied for.

Her current visa, if your dates and conditions are correct would allow her to leave and re enter the country without doing anything else other than taking a short holiday anywhere outside of Oz. She could then re enter for a further 6 months on the current visa which would allow her to be here when her daughters are ready to go home.

When her current visa is finished....she will have to leave the country to apply for a new tourist visa.
