FIFA DELEGATES ‘WANTED BRIBES TO BACK ENGLAND’

Wednesday May 11,2011

By Mark Reynolds

ENGLAND had virtually no chance of securing the 2018 Football World Cup after refusing to pay millions of pounds in bribes to corrupt Fifa delegates, it was alleged yesterday.

Former FA chairman Lord Triesman told MPs that four Fifa executive members sought bribes in return for backing England’s failed bid.

He named them as Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi.

Lord Triesman alleged Fifa vice-president Warner asked for around £2.5million to build an education centre in his homeland, Trinidad, with the cash to be channelled through him – and later wanted £500,000 to buy Haiti’s World Cup TV rights, again channelled through him. Lord Triesman said Paraguay’s Leoz asked for a knighthood.

Brazil’s Teixeira asked Triesman to “come and tell me what you have got for me”, with the implication being he wanted something for his vote.

Thailand’s Makudi wanted to be given the TV rights to a friendly between England and the Thai national team. It has also been claimed two more Fifa executive committee members were paid nearly £1million to vote for Qatar’s successful 2022 World Cup bid. If true, the allegations mean the huge expense and effort of England’s bid, which saw PM David Cameron, Prince William and David Beckham travel to talk to delegates in Zurich, was all wasted.

Lord Triesman, initially chairman of England’s bid, told a Department of Culture, Media and Sport Commons committee that the behaviour of the Fifa delegates was “below what would be ethically acceptable”.

He was now taking his evidence of corruption to Fifa itself – but feared it would only “fall on deaf ears”. Lord Triesman said the FA did not complain at the time for fear of jeopardising England’s bid, which got just two of 22 votes. Russia landed the tournament. He also revealed the FA was bounced into bidding for the World Cup by the then PM Gordon Brown.

“He did not give an ultimatum – he announced it before the FA board had considered it,” said the peer. Yesterday Fifa president Sepp Blatter promised he would act immediately if evidence of wrongdoing was revealed. But Mr Warner dismissed the peer’s claims as “a piece of nonsense” adding: “I’ve never asked Triesman nor any other person for any money for my vote at any time.

“In the English campaign, before Triesman was unceremoniously kicked out, I’ve spoken to him on his initiative on only three occasions. None of his other colleagues will ever corroborate his bit of trivia.”

The only way a VIP Thai gets disciplined - are if his trespasses are revealed by farang on the international level. It never happens 'in-house'. Earlier, the former head of Thailand's Cultural Dept. got in trouble because a farang couple from California were indicted in a US court and her name got mentioned. Her travails would have never been exposed or mentioned if the matter was looked at by Thai authorities. Similarly, this FIFA thing won't go anywhere if Thai authorities are relied upon. If there's any disciplinary action, it will come from outside Thailand, by farang investigators and farang institutions.

The greed and gutter behaviour of FIFA is breathtaking and appalling. I have stood outside their opulent building in the hills above Zurich. The money spent on it. And Blatter wanders the world like a king. Treated like a king. But he is a Dictator. He loves it. dam_n the expense. He should not be allowed to have a 4th term. He is a disgrace to the Swiss. A disgrace to fair play. And a block on Football innovation on the field.

Warner in particular is a throughly obnoxious individual. His son sold tickets for the 2nd last World Cup at vastly inflated prices. Warner has been in court a few times for failing to pay bonuses due to the Jamacian World Cup squad of 2006. His smart arse remarks to Andrew Jennings when questioned at an airport were a disgrace coming from a FIFA vice president. It was nauseating the way England cosied up to him before the vote. But of course he brings in votes for Blatter.

As for the Thai member can we be surprised.

With hindsight England should have told FIFA where to stick the World Cup before the vote. In view of all these past and present allegations why are Eufa rowing in behind Blatter like sheep? Surely some of the national FA's should stand up and be counted and to hell with what Platini thinks.

sour grapes.

Not really - the corruption in FIFA is well documented even before Sepp Blatter's rise to power. The Andrew Jennings book is an invaluable read, for those interested in the politics of FIFA, including their deals with Addidas, a military junta (Argentine) amongst others. Jack Warner is possibly the worst of the lot - even placing bogus delegates into vote in place of the Hatian delegate at several conferences, and selling an extra 20,000 tickets that didn't exist from a Worl Cup qualifier in Jamaica - he is only head of CONCACAF through his dodgy dealings. What is more disappointing is that Triesman as only had the balls to come up with this at this point. People like Blatter, Warner and Worawi amongst others need to be cleansed out of the game. Worawi is hanging on for grim death at the moment at FAT, and is likely to get the boot, thus losing his FIFA post. His actions at the weekend to cancel the voting, is only a way for him to try and "buy" some more time to try and get himself re-elected.

Sadly while the Anglophile Blatter and his lapdog the once great player Platini are in power nothing will be done to change.

It seems Blatter has been a dictator in that post for ever and while he quielty sanctions bribes with him getting his cut then it'll remain trhe status Quo.

Well done the Thai guy though he screwed the chances for Thailand to host a widely viewed and commercially succesfull friendly with England.

I was already planning on arranging accomodation and transport for 300 England fans when the sh*t hit the fan. Luckily they never parted with any money at that time..

Corruption Scandal Threatens FAT President

Many leading international press agencies have implicated the President of the Football Association of Thailand, in the 2018 FIFA World Cup bid corruption scandal.

According to reports by many leading international press agencies, including Reuters and BBC, the former President of the English Football Association Lord David Triesman has claimed that at least four FIFA executive committee members have accepted bribes to vote for England in the 2018 World Cup bid.

However, England was eliminated during the first round of voting, and the right to host the World Cup was eventually awarded to Russia.

President of the Football Association of Thailand Worawee Makudi is among those implicated in the corruption scandal by Triesman.

On May 6, Worawee controversially called off the Thai FA presidential election.

Triesman has made an allegation that Worawee agreed to vote for England in exchange for the broadcasting rights of the now-canceled friendly fixture between Thailand and England.

Triesman claimed that many FIFA executive committee members have taken part in immoral and unethical activities.

Worawee has been in Qatar since May 8 to negotiate with the President of the Asian Football Confederation Mohamed Bin Hammam on the 2012 Olympics ban imposed on the Thai National Football Team for fielding a suspended player in the first preliminary round.

Blatter and FIFA would run Thailand and its governance close at being totally corrupt.

but Blatter has enough of FIFAs members tied up with his kick backs to ensure he stays there for life.,says it all about World professional football

Kettle calling the pot black. Same same. Only thing is England lost. Would have been more gentlemanly of England to have reported the corruption BEFORE the vote was cast. That would have made them look better. At this, people are unsure if England DID payoff some FIFA members. But they have the nerve to make these accusations. Hence the sour grapes label.

Scottish by chance?

Seriously, if you read my earlier comment, I suggested that Triesman should have grown some before, and put this out. However, it is pretty fair to say that this was well documented in the British media prior to the vote, and I suspect was leaked by those at the English FA, but they had to distance themselves somewhat. The politics of FIFA are very murky. Not really sour grapes IMO - the vote was a total farce.

Corruption was well publicised before the vote by the English media, and where do you think they were getting their information from? FIFA knew and the result was England got 2 votes.

Yes the FA should have gone public themselves with it, but what is the bigger crime here? The fact that they didn't or the fact that FIFA is riddled with corruption, cheating and rigging?

Do you have any idea what an enormous event the world cup is?

The chances were already dented somewhat by the English press. It would have been highly irresponsible of the committee to do anything that would further jeopardise the chances of hosting the event. And report the corruption to who? Report it to FIFA? What, exactly do you think that would achieve. It would simply be shooting oneself in the foot for no good reason.

The level of corruption within FIFA has been known for some years and cnuts like Blatter should be nowhere near the game. A full independent and criminal investigation is needed, throw the thieving bastards in jail.

Interesting to note a distinct lack of the word "sport" here. Quite right too - it certainly isn't at this level. Modern substitute for the gladiatorial ring, yes.

Seems to me entirely reasonable the way this has come out.

The original allegations of corruption were not specific, not against any named individual and were the subject of a newspaper sting and a bugged conversation. They were not put freely into the public domain.

The Triesman allegations are against specific named individuals and had he made them at another time or place, highly actionable under British libel laws.

He waited until now because statements made to a parliamentary inquiry are subject to parliamentary privilege and he can make them without fear of libel action.

Its not sour grapes.

What a joke that institution and "sport" is. Still, mindless idiots will tune in.

Do you tune into-Cycling--boxing--cricket--athletics--or don't you tune in at all?? name something that isn't considered a joke.

So football isn't alone is it ?? Example-Henry Cooper v M. Ali remember ? corrupt / cheating has been going on since time began.

Take it you do not like sport ??

It makes not sense to me why such an esteem institution as the FA would want to "Deal" with such a CORRUPT organization as FIFA. The point that England was willing to dance with the devil taints her reputation as well.

The World Cup is one of the most popular sporting event of the planet - but that doesn't mean that FIFA is not corrupt. The timing of the expose was somewhat questionable and reminds me of a dissatisfied boy fretting because he wasn't able to get the candy he had desired for so long.

Unfortunately for English, FIFA is a much larger beast than it can handle or manipulate.

Just heard from a Thai friend that Makudi has been cleared of all charges. It was apparently in the Thai newspapers.

I must admit I haven't seen anything in the British press.

I can't yet find a video of the entire press conference of Sepp Blatter on May 30, only of the

, but here is an extract from a news article on goal.com:
Blatter also said that there would be no action taken against the four individuals accused by Lord Treisman earlier in May at the House of Commons.

He said: “The Executive Committee of Fifa was very pleased to receive the report of the Football Association regarding the allegations made on 10th of May by Lord David Triesman at the House of Commons against four Fifa Executive Committee members [Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Texeira, Worawi Makudi, and Warner].

“And we were happy that we can confirm there are no elements in this report which would even prompt of any proceedings.

“But for the sake of transparency Fifa and the FA, we have agreed that a comprehensive summary of this report made by James Dingemans on behalf of the FA would be published.”

From a news report in another language I understand that the mentioned summary will be put on the FIFA website.

FIFA corrupted? What a news.

Everywhere there is a lot of money, there is corruption. And there is a lot of money at FIFA.

Plus the football player are not reputed to be very smart.

If you have a cocktail of stupid corrupted rich arrogant people. What do you expect?

Not only is Worawee proclaiming his innocence, he is planning to sue Lord Triesman in the highest court he can find for damage to his reputation, and by association that of Thailand as a whole.

From today's paper:

"I want to inform the Thai press (about my innocence) to protect my reputation and honour and that of my family, as well as the reputation of Thailand. Apart from that, I want the Thai press to check the record of Lord Triesman, as to why he was forced to leave his position of Chairman of the Football Association.

"Last week, I instructed a team of lawyers to send documents to the English parliament to seek justice and in the documents I ask Lord Triesman to repeat his remarks in public so that I can instigate legal proceedings."

Apart from that, Worawee (Thai nickname Bang Yee) confirmed that he would continue his complaint, whether Lord Triesman had protective privilege in England or not, and would proceed with the complaint up to the highest legal authority, even to the UK Supreme Court and certainly would not withdraw, in order to achieve justification for himself.

Triesman is a case, all right..

Lord Triesman was parachuted into the FA chairmanship by Gordon Brown's government as a 'new broom' to repair the organisation's reputation after a string of sex scandals.

He took up his post in 2008 after the FA both England coach Sven Goran Eriksson and FA chief executive Mark Palios were revealed to have had affairs with secretary Faria Alam.

Lord Triesman made his controversial comments to his former aide Melissa Jacobs, 37, a civil servant.

She claims that she and the 66-year-old peer conducted a six-month affair, which she says she ended after becoming uncomfortable about dating a married man.

Although Lord Triesman says he and Miss Jacobs were friends who did no more than 'kiss on the cheek', she has written a raunchy internet blog in which she praises him as 'an extremely good kisser' who 'loved caressing her body'.

I'd say that 'Bang Yee' has a point...
