South Korea kicks off G-20 parliamentary leaders forum

2011-05-19 07:11:51 GMT+7 (ICT)

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (BNO NEWS) -- The Group of 20 (G-20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors inaugurated its three-day forum in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday, which will gather parliamentary leaders to discuss global safety and development issues.

Parliamentary leaders and representatives from 26 nations and groups, including five non-G-20 members and Inter-Parliamentary Union members, will be gathering under the forum's theme "Safe World, Better Future," South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

Park Hee-tae, South Korea's National Assembly speaker, welcomed the leaders at a dinner event at a hotel in Seoul, saying that the forum could help strengthen global partnership in connection with the G-20 summit and provide an impetus to inter-parliamentary collaboration for world peace and anti-terrorism.

Meetings are also expected to review topics such as methods for developing economies and post-financial crisis policies.

November's scheduled G-20 economic summit is also to be hosted by Seoul, but the three-day inter-parliamentary forum and meeting comes as an extension of the summit.
