Receiving Tweets Via Mobile Phones In Thailand

Featured Replies

I recently set up a Twitter account, and in the account settings, there is a facility to receive tweets via sms on your mobile phone.

Yet when I go to the relevant window and hit the country 'drop down box', Thailand is not listed. Cambodia is there, along with most of the world, but not Thailand.

Can anyone confirm that it is indeed impossible to receive tweets via sms in Thailand?

And could someone also confirm that if you are a country where tweets can be received via sms, do you need a phone with a web browser to receive them. I can't think why you should, but my friend seems to think you do, and not being a technical person I may be wrong on this.

I should add that I can access Twitter and tweets on my phone by browsing on the net, but this is not the same as receiving them automatically via sms.

If it is correct that the sms service is not available here, then what is the reason? Is it a commercial decision or is it political?

Maybe the government has banned it as the exchange of political and sensitive information via tweets/sms would be far more widespread than is currently the case via the internet.

If your mobile phone has a browser or a tweet client you can receive tweets anywhere in the world, but from what you explain I think you are referring to receiving tweets over sms - and I guess, since you don't see any Thai operators on the list, it's not available here. I don't think it's a government hush-up thing, just lack of consumer demand.

I still think its a bit odd. Countries as diverse as Bhutan, Fiji, Cambodia,Palestine Territories,Papua, Rwanda amongst countless others - many arguably much less developed than Thailand - are all on the list.

Thailand, along with Vietnam and China (which are communist) are conspicuous by their absence.

I smell a political rat here....
