Afghan anti-NATO protests enter second day

2011-05-19 19:51:15 GMT+7 (ICT)

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Anti-NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) protests in northern Afghanistan entered their second day on Thursday, as thousands of protesters have claimed innocent civilians were killed during the NATO raid.

According to reports, five people were critically injured during Thursday's protests, hospital officials told Pajhwok Afghan News.

On Wednesday, at least 12 people were killed and over 80 injured, as demonstrations gathered between 3,000 and 4,000 protesters in Taloqan, the capital of Afghanistan's northeastern Takhar province.

Governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa said Wednesday's protests turned violent as they were planned by militants. Private and public properties were damaged, shops and government offices closed, and the police headquarters was partially burnt.

Shots were then fired against hundreds of protesters, as security forces tried to regain control.

According to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the NATO-led raid late Tuesday night in the Gwamali area of Taloqan targeted an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator and resulted in the death of four insurgents, including two armed females, but protesters say they were innocent civilians.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the raid, arguing that government officials had previously warned NATO on numerous occasions "about such irresponsible operations." He also demanded explanations regarding the incident..
