Yingluck: Amnesty Will Restore Peace

The Pheu Thai Party's top candidate says her party and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra bear similarities, but are not clones.

Pheu Thai Party prime ministerial candidate Yingluck Shinawatra, sister of the former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra, said the only reason her party can be called a clone of Thanksin is because there are similarities between herself and her brother.

Yingluck said she has always observed her brother's work and his far-sighted vision, but she vowed to run the country according to her own vision.

She said she will use her experience of having managed several large companies and apply it to running the country.

Yingluck said the party is now traveling to different provinces to meet the people, in order to inform them about the party's policies.

She said creating unity within the country is the party's primary goal.

As for amnesty, Yingluck said justice is essential to the country's development, while emphasizing that the system will need to be adjusted to provide fairness for all Thai citizens, and not just for particular groups of people.

She said amnesty will cover all regions of Thailand, and the amendment will be effective for all cases since September 19, 2006.

Given her sudden appearance on the political stage I would have thought that she might want to meet people primarily to hear what they think about the main issues.

Pheu Thai's number one party-list candidate Yingluck Shinawatra said the party's legal team is confident she is eligible to run in the upcoming general election.

Pheu Thai legal team believes the ruling by the Supreme Court to seize the assets of her brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, will not affect her eligibility to contest in the poll.

Doubt has been cast over Yingluck's poll candidacy over the court's ruling against Thaksin and and his family members for asset concealment.

The current Constitution bans any individual found guilty in an asset seizure case from contesting in an election.

Yingluck along with Pheu Thai's economic team today visited Bang Kapi District to introduce herself to voters.

She said Pheu Thai will focus on controlling the rising cost of living.

Yingluck's visit was warmly welcomed by a large number of Pheu Thai's supporters who were holding posters and signboards with supporting messages for her and the party.

Yingluck is scheduled to hold a major campaign rally in Chiang Mai tomorrow at the province's 700th Anniversary Stadium.

She will then travel to Lamphun before leaving for Chiang Rai and Phayao.

She still didn't mention or comment in the above article, what her qualification IS and what is has to do with politics (or maybe she learned better to remain silent than to further discredit her lack of experience as well as having held shares for her demagogue. When a candidate can't deliver a clear vision and a clear plan with confidence, nor would I be comfident in them (like Obama and "change" without stating what changes). Might be like that beer commercial, where they ask Miss Universe how she would change the planet, and she replies, "which planet?!"

That could be an interesting legal battle ---- since the court did make several significant and direct statements in their ruling.

She is going to run into the same pitfalls that tripped up her brother and also many, many other successful business people that try to go into politics. Namely unrelenting criticism that you are unused to receiving and having every word you utter picked apart.

Wonder how long it will be before she shows up at a news conference with a buzzer and little sign with “X” on it to avoid answering questions she doesn’t like.

That is extremely bad news. The highest priority of a corporation is profit. Other factors like people's wellbeing and the environment are only a small concern (and only because of regulatory requirements, otherwise there would be often no concern at all).

Wow, what I nice specific day to dat amnesty back to... come on lets face it. VAGUE agenda here in this persons brain for bettering Thailand as a community locally or internationally. Waste of everyones time and money to even allow to run with such vague agenda. Only the pawn to open the door for her brother and other criminals to receive amnesty and continue to rob the coffers of Thailand.

Somehow all this is vaguely reminding of the Marcos clan in the Philippines!

So disappointed in the direction of Thailand. Reminds me more and more of the country I left 24 years ago to live here.....the US.

If she going to treat the country as a corporation, she probably sees all these rural people as her cleaners and slave workers, i.e. the little people at the bottom of the corporate structure.

EC: Yingluck still qualified despite perjury allegation

BANGKOK, 20 May 2011 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that the qualifications of the Pheu Thai Party’s prime minister candidate Yingluck Shinawatra are not affected by the case involving her false testimony in court.

Questions have been raised over Ms Yingluck’s eligibility for premiership following an allegation over her provision of false information during the asset concealment trial of her elder brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. However, EC Chairman Apichart Sukhagganond clarified that Ms Yingluck’s candidacy was not in violation of the electoral law as no ruling on the case had been made by the Court on the day of registration.

On the other hand, he noted that it would be a different story if the candidate was given a jail sentence as the EC would need to reconsider her qualifications. Moreover, any complaints received over the perjury case would also be taken into account.

Although the candidate registration process had just begun, Mr Apichart admitted that there had been some reports of electoral misconducts. EC officials across the country have thus been instructed to work with utmost neutrality in preventing law violations.

Where there's a will there's a way

I don’t much like generalisations, but some are hard to resist. Thais seems to have already implicitly agreed there is a national amnesty (centuries ago?) on inconsistencies. This conveniently saves face for all Thais. For us Westerners, it looks like dishonesty. That’s a problem for Thailand, and it may not serve the Thai nation well during the next few months. It certainly hasn’t in the past.
