Yingluck qualified to run: EC

No charges yet against Pheu Thai No 1; PM questions her pledge to reconcile

Yingluck Shinawatra, the youngest sister of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, is qualified to contest the July 3 general election, the chairman of the Election Commission said yesterday, even though some reports linked her to the seizure of billions of assets belonging to her brother.

EC chief Apichart Sukhagganond said Yingluck, who is Pheu Thai's No 1 party-list candidate, has not yet been charged in any criminal case.

"The trial concerning the seizure of Thaksin's assets in which Khun Yingluck was involved was not a criminal one, but a political one," the chairman said.

Apichart was referring to allegations that Yingluck might have committed perjury when testifying in court in the assets seizure case against her brother. Moreover, an investigation into the perjury case against Yingluck has not yet begun, he said.

As No 1 on Pheu Thai's party list, Yingluck could become Thailand's first woman prime minister if her party wins a majority in the election on July 3. Thaksin, who fled abroad to avoid a two-year jail term on corruption charges and abuse of power, has said she is not his nominee but his "clone".

Meanwhile, Yingluck will today join a major rally in her hometown of Chiang Mai as part of the election campaign. Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva will tomorrow start addressing his supporters live in his weekly programme via social media.

Every Sunday at 8.10pm, Abhisit will talk live through "Abhisit Ch 10" on his Facebook page. It will also be broadcast on the party's Facebook page. The programme will be broadcast through a livestream system that allows the audience to interact in real time, party-list MP candidate Apirak Kosayodhin said.

The Democrat Party has drawn No 10 for the election. The party also launched a Democrat smart-phone application to follow the election campaign. Users of iPhone can download the application and listen to Abhisit's voice promoting the party's policies.

Yingluck yesterday visited people at Bang Kapi market in Bangkok. She received a warm welcome from vendors at the market. Some of them hugged her and many pointed their fingers, mimicking the party's number - No 1.

Yingluck said that if her party were elected, she would revoke the system of selling eggs by weight. However, she said she would keep the Democrats' good policies.

Yingluck cancelled a planned campaign event at Duang Prateep Foundation in Klong Toei to prepare for today's event in Chiang Mai's San Kamphaeng district. Her son Suphasek Amornchat, her brother Payap, her nephew Panthongtae (the son of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra), her brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat and his family, Pheu Thai leader Yongyuth Wichaidit, deputy leader Plodprasop Suraswadi, Chalerm Yoobamrung and red-shirt leader Natthawut Saikua will join the event.

Abhisit yesterday went to Tha Muang district in Kanchanaburi to promote the farmers' earnings guarantee and free education for children. The audience presented him with garlands and said they would vote for the party.

Abhisit slammed Pheu Thai's policies and said he questioned Yingluck's pledge to push for reconciliation.

"I don't know Yingluck personally. She might be very determined to reconcile but I am afraid of her team. I saw the names on Pheu Thai's party list and I am afraid of Jatuporn Promphan, Natthawut Saikua, Weng Tojirakarn and Vipoothalaeng [Pattana-poomthai]. Even though Arisman [Pongruan-grong] is not qualified, his wife is also in," he said.

Abhisit also visited Wat Rai Khing in Nakhon Pathom during the campaign trail. A group of 20 red-shirt supporters gathered to protest against Abhisit. During his speech, a woman in a red-chested shirt shouted that the Bt360 she received from the government was not enough for a student uniform, which cost Bt400. Another woman named Manatchaya Siripong said she suffered due to the government's crackdown against protesters on April 10 last year.

The Chart Thai Pattana Party yesterday unveiled luk thung singer Boonteung Kaewsinual, aka Monsit Kamsoi, as its MP candidate in Mukdahan's constituency 2, and former Pheu Thai MP Adul Wanchaithanawong as candidate in Mae Hong Son. The Bhum Jai Thai Party unveiled 15 MP candidates for Nakhon Ratchasima, including Boonjong Wongtrairat running in constituency 10.

give me a break

she gets a handout of 360 baht and can't add 40 baht to it for her student child????????

exactly what do these freeloaders want ?

thaksin gave nothing towards school uniforms, this is Abhisits policy

i would not embarass myself and tell the whole world i can't find 40 baht of my own to buy my child a school uniform

that aside, if a 40 baht shortfall from the social fund in the price of a uniform is all this red can find to complain about during Abhisits tenure then i think he has done pretty well

it also shows the gimme, gimme, gimme, me, me, me, culture inbred into the reds

they think they are special and should be given handout after handout by the government

its getting like the Uk here, were the haves are paying for the lazy bastard welfare have nots and won't work chavs

there are some things Abhisit should have left firmly behind in UK..........

''A group of 20 red-shirt supporters gathered to protest against Abhisit.''

i would really like to know what would happen if a group of 20 yellow shirts or Thaksin opponents were to protest at Yunglicks rally in Chang Mai?

should we take a poll as to what fate might befall them?

Naaaa, i know already............

so come on red supporters, try to tell me that they would respect the other peoples views, tell me nothing would happen to them if they shouted out at Yunglick?

tell me the reds would respect the democratic view that they claim they do not have now and are so desperate to get?

tell me that any descenting voice upon pain of possible death would dare to even try to disrupt her rally in redhead central..........

I am confused....

In this article it is said that Thaksin said the following about Yingluck

<quote>

...she is not his nominee but his "clone".

</quote>

In another article it is said that Yingluck said the following

<quote>

...says her party and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra bear similarities, but are not clones

</quote>

So what is it?

The representative is a clone, but the party isn't?

Confused...

You've got that right! Every country seems to have their bums and lazy welfare recipients. Some actually really need it, but this bunch just wants to have everything provided. Like back when they got their loans and instead of investing in farmland and seeds to grow crops, they bought new bikes, phones and beer.

When Hat Yai and Songkla flooded, the people vowed to rebuild and work together. When Korat flooded, they wanted the gov't to come in and pay for everything. Says something about these folks.

Precisely, because she will surely be disqualified if it is proved that she committed perjury to save her brother from the clink. This is a very SERIOUS crime (lying on oath) and very much a criminal crime and not the political one that she is deemed to have committed, whatever that is!!!

I suppose the only thing that might slow it down or save her is that the police (as a force) tend to be Pheu Thai sympathisers whereas the army is firmly on Abhisits side. As an aside to this - did anyone notice how many police (ex-police) appear on Pheu Thai's candidacy list - pol sergeant this, pol colonel that, and there was 'red shirt' hero Sae Deng - in the army but a renegade major-general that bragged about masterminding the April 10th riot which killed a number of soldiers and Colonel Romklao Thuwatham and he was thought to be behind the many grenade attacks beforehand. He committed the fatal mistake of taking Romkloa's life and that of many soldiers, thereby breaking the military code of honour, it was only a matter of time before an army sniper took his life. That it was done during a live interview with the New York Times emphasised the extent of his 'crimes against his own' in a very public honour assassination.

Interesting to see how this one plays out.

Perjury has a statue of limitations in the Thai legal system. Her brother was acknowledged to have committed perjury, but the statue of limitations had expired. Keep the cases postponed, appealed long enough and you can waltz out of any real penalty phase of the proceedings.

I will, he's started 15 years free.

He also improved the school milk program fresh not bad milk for more grades.

Installed a real reformer at the top of Ministry of Education.

Granted the old players are a tough fight to make changes happen in spite of their best efforts at stagnation

90% subsidies fro uniforms is not bad. Better would be to do away with the military regimentist uniforms for children all together. And the idiotic haircuts too.

reports linked her to the seizure of billions of assets belonging to her brother.

allegations that Yingluck might have committed perjury when testifying in court in the assets seizure case against her brother.

At issue here is that the Supreme Court ruled last year that Thaksin hid his Shin Corporation shares and that he misused his position as PM to to enrich his company. This is why 46,370,000,000 Baht was seized from his assets.

It also ruled that there were 20 proxies (mainly his adult children and other relatives) who served as shields to hide his actual control of the stock.

Yingluck was one of them with her 20,000,000 shares of the corporation.

No! We have a 15 year and a 17 year old daughter.The new school year just started and my

wife figures about 10,000 Baht for each for this semester. However both of our daughters are in honor classes.

One has the live here like we do to understand what is true. Not to hear it from a guy in a bar or even other

Farangs that live here and have no children, they also do not have a clue.

With all due respect to yourself and others, the free education program is not the topic of this thread. It's the EC's current position on the potential perjury committed by Yingluck over her proxy holding of 20 million shares, but just to add an anecdotal, the niece attends a government primary school and last year's education cost her parents zero baht for tuition, books, and school uniform. Perhaps anyone not having a similar experience is dealing with corruption on a local level by the individual school and not a shortcoming in the program itself. I would encourage anyone having such experiences to contact the appropriate authorities overseeing the program (Education Ministry) in order to stem any local corruption perpetrated against it.

In the meantime, it is hoped that the discussion can return to the decision of the EC and the forthcoming court case involving Yingluck.

The list of family members at the campaign event in Chiang Mai really shows that merit is not being used to discriminate in the Pheu Thai party. This family affair does not deserve to get any votes. Unfortunately it is likely to get quite a few.

Mark is a good candidate it seems, I hope he does well. He needs to clear out his party of its corruption and military links. Can he do that and survive?

It is going to take a long time to improve Thai politics; I guess I will not live to see it.

well the uniforms shall "prevent" dress competition, they got'em in OZ too... however, the specific typo of haircut is aimed at lice-prevention - regards from ministry of health!

Agreed could be improved, but there are other things much more worrying, f.E. some well to do bullies are allowed to have their "servants" who even, next to many other "slave jobs", do the reading for them and, and, and talk to a teacher, best a foreign teacher @ a government school... Nuff said.

money and influence is allowed to control way too much in this country... but it's part of the 'culture", the Thai way of livin' - well let'em... look around!
