BMA may charge extra for 'excess' garbage disposal

Bangkok residents may soon have pay more for the collection of their household garbage, if the new "dumpmore paymore" fee structure proposed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is approved.

Bangkok deputy governor Pornthep Techapaibul said the new fee structure would boost BMA's earnings by more than Bt3 billion every year, which would be offset by the excessive costs of garbage disposal the BMA was now burdened with. He did not give details about what he considered excessive.

A citywide survey showed that an annual fee of Bt240 was collected from households, which is different from the Bt50 figure cited by Pornthep. Of the 2.34 million households in Bangkok, BMA only collects fees from 1.92 million, and Pornthep could not explain why.

The BMA disposes of 8,000 tonnes of garbage each month, relying on an extra budget shouldered by the BMA. Pornthep did not give details about how much it would cost to dispose of all the garbage without the BMA having to pay extra or how much extra BMA was already paying.

The citizens say that they are paying 240 baht annually for garbage collection... Pornthep says that they are paying 50 baht. Where is the other 190 baht? That is a lot of money missing.

Hmmm... 190 x 1.92 million households (if that number is correct) = 364.8 million baht annually.

That is not skimming, that is being greedy!

The annual fee collected is indeed 240 baht - we paid it yesterday; as we have done since 2007 when they changed to an annual 240 baht fee.

yes, that is correct, we pay the same annual fee. when we want them to collect a lot of extra garbage, like when weeding out our garden, the boys usually want to be paid 100 Baht for the particular job. I find this perfectly alright as they are doing a great job to carry away all the tons of plastic bags, bottles, kitchen refuse, etc. each house produces per year for a meager 240 Baht. Let's only hope that the hard working guys on the garbage trucks at least get a more or less decent wage....

Another bank guy that cant explain where all the money has gone? :whistling:

Sounds like the other bank manager that cant explain where 10 Billion Baht went?

i guess what will happen as in many western countries: people will dump their stuff somewhere near down the road or nature... is that better ?

It is different.

How could a bank manger explain where 10 billion Baht of nationwide cash withdrawal went? Unlike someone pays cash into a bank account, bank manager seldom know what people are doing with all their cash. And nothing else he had said.

They will continue to dump it down the drains, which will block them as usual and cause flooding when it rains.

100% correct.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Bangkok city officials were to levy this fee of 240bt to all households, then set up a proper means of collecting the monies, so that some corrupt scum bag couldn't filter off their bit. TIT.

They collect only 8,000tonnes each month. Me thinks someone has got their sum's wrong? Unless that is it the rest is dumped down the drains or wherever. :bah:

All you upper class people in BKK, paying 240 bht per year you are so fortunate. WE go one better than that, OURS is FREE, yes free bins for our rubbish brilliant. BUT NO COLLECTION and collection was not planned when we were given the new bins :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:
