Top Democrat Derides Grim Forecast against Party

The Democrat secretary general says he is not worried about the Bhum Jai Thai Party helmsman's belief that the Democrat Party will not win the election.

He said other parties have no right to judge the party's future.

Democrat secretary general Suthep Thaugsuban said speculations will always be made ahead of the general election.

However, Suthep said he was surprised by the forecast made by Bhum Jai Thai de facto leader Newin Chidchob.

Newin said he believed acting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva would be forced to step down as Democrat leader if the party failed to win the July election.

The Bhum Jai Thai de facto leader also said he believed Pheu Thai Party's number one party-list MP candidate Yingluck Shinawatra will not be nominated for the premier post either.

Suthep commented that Newin is not in the position to make comments about the future of political parties other than Bhum Jai Thai.

Despite his harsh words, Suthep said he can work with Bhum Jai Thai and its de facto leader in the future.

Suthep maintained the Democrat Party has been able to effectively steered Thailand out of many crises.

He added that if Pheu Thai was elected into office, political turmoil will persist as it is undeniably linked to the red-shirt group.

Suthep denied he had defamed the Pheu Thai Party and the red-shirt group by saying they were responsible the political riots last year.

He said he was merely stating facts.

His comment has prompted Pheu Thai and the red-shirt group to file a complaint with the poll panel asking for an investigation against Suthep.

They claimed his party had employed a smear campaign against them which constitutes to a violation of the election law.

Suthep said he is ready to defend the case in court.

He urged the Election Commission to look into behavior of a party that employed its supporters to disrupt campaign activities of other parties.

'One Stop' registration of migrant workers to facilitate employers

BANGKOK, May 26 – Thailand's Department of Employment will allow employers to register their migrant worker employees using a ‘one stop’ service system, which will allow the whole process to be finished at one place.

Department of Employment Director-General Sutassanee Suebwongpat said that there are about two million migrant labourers working illegally in Thailand and about 200,000 businesses across the country are expected to apply for the registration of migrant workers from June 15- July 14.

Officials from the Interior Ministry and Public Health Ministry will help make records and offer medical check-up for migrant workers. Initially, the one stop system is ready in Bangkok, Samut Sakorn and Chonburi.

The service is convenient for employers and it is expected that they will cooperate in registering their migrant workers to help solve the problem of illegal workers and human trafficking, the director-general said. (MCOT online news)
