The Appeals Court yesterday upheld a lower court's ruling to acquit the acting chief of the AntiMoney Laundering Office (AMLO), as well as an investigator and a legal official from the agency.

The court read its verdict on a lawsuit filed by Somchai "Kamnan Poh" Khunpleum's daughter Jiraporn Khunpleum against AMLO investigator Pol LtColonel Sunai Hareunpat, AMLO's legal official Atchariyapan Wongwan and thenacting chief Colonel Yuthabul Dissaman for filing a wrong complaint and abusing authority.

In December 2005, AMLO had seized Bt30 million worth of assets belonging to Kamnan Poh and others due to collusion in landprocurement bids in Chon Buri's Khao Mai Kaew area. Of the assets seized, Jiraporn owns Bt13.4 million worth.

The lower court had acquitted the three in December 2007 on grounds that they were just carrying out their duties, but the plaintiff filed an appeal. Similarly, the Appeals Court also ruled that the defendants were just doing their duty and had kept the plaintiff informed about the asset seizure.

The Palang Chon Party team is introduced to a large crowd at their party formation celebration in Bangsaen

Kunplome family party hopes independence wins seats in July election

With the establishment of a new political party, Chonburi’s powerful Kunplome family is hoping a visage of independence from Thailand’s warring red and yellow factions will lead it to solid wins in July’s national elections. Sonthaya Kunplome, banned from politics for five years after serving as a Tourism & Sports Minister in Thaksin Shinawatra’s disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party, announced May 6 the formation of “Palang Chon,” or the “Force of Chonburi” Party to a crowd of about 20,000 supporters.

As he cannot hold office again until at least the end of 2012, Sonthaya said Chao Maneewong, former dean of Burapha University, will lead the party, with the eldest Kunplome brother serving as “advisor.” At the press conference in Bangsaen, Sonthaya said he hopes to see Palang Chon win as many as 15 seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The party will contest elections in Thailand’s east, north, and northeast, although most expect the party to gain most of its wins in Chonburi, where his brothers Wittaya and Itthiphol are, respectively, CEO of the Chonburi Administrative Organization and Mayor of Pattaya.

In Chonburi, the party will put up candidates in all eight constituency zones, including Sonthaya’s wife, Sukumol, in zone 6, which covers the Banglamung/Pattaya district and Poramet Ngampichet contesting in zone 7. Poramet is the son of Sansak Ngampichet, former Health Minister and former Chairman of the House Committee on Tourism and Sports. Sansak was also named as a Party-list candidate.

50 years ago, any outside observer looking at this country would have been astounded that it was more or less run by warlords with their own private armies, in reality only answerable to themselves within their own dominions.

Hasn't changed much in 50 years, except warlords are now commonly referred to as .............. politicians.

More bad news for the Khunpleum family as the Criminal Court today seized the 15 Million Baht bail bond put up by his daughter, Jiraporn.

Worth noting is that current Culture Minister, Sukumol Khunpleum, is the wife of Somchai's son, banned TRT MP Sonthaya Khunpleum.

Supreme Court upholds 25-year term against Kamnan Poh

The Supreme Court Monday upheld the 25 year jail term to Somchai "Kamnan Poh" Khunploem, 73, and former member of the Chon Buri's Saensuk Municipality Council Passakorn Homhuan, 44, for masterminding the murder of Tambon Tha Samet Kamnan Prayoon Sitthichoke at a wedding party on March 9, 2003.

Since the two defendants failed to show up at the Monday verdict reading, the Supreme Court read the verdict in their absence and issued arrest warrants for them.

On June 21, 2004, the Criminal Court sentenced the two men to 25 years each in jail after finding them guilty of hiring gunmen for Bt3 million to kill Prayoon.

The Criminal Court ordered Somchai to serve the murder case’s jail term, after completion of the five year and four month jail term given to him in another ruling for the corruption over a purchase of public land in Tambon Khao Mai Kaew to build a garbage landfill.

The duo then appealed for the lawsuit dismissal claiming they were innocent and had no previous dispute with Prayoon.

The Appeal Court on Oct 12, 2006 upheld the Criminal Court’s verdict, prompting the duo to appeal to the Supreme Court.
