Hi,

I will visit Bangkok on July and I need to purchase a 3G SIM for my Huawei MiFi Router, for connecting the notebook and ipod.

I don't know where can I buy the SIM card, and which one is suitable for me. I have search the truemove official website, there are some packages, can anyone help me?

For the Huawei MiFi (pocket wifi) setting: I need to set

1. APN - ??? (will the SIM card has a guide for doing that?)

2. Login and password : just using my Huawei MiFi existing config is OK? ... or I need to input a specify characters?

Please help!!!

We need the EXACT model number. Specifically to determine the frequencies supported so then we can recommend a service provider.

Are you staying just in Bangkok? For how long? How much data will you use (MB or GB per month)?

Hi Lomatopo,

Thanks for your reply.

I will come to Bangkok in July, and staying for 5 days. The Mifi model is Huawei E583C, unlocked.

Would you mind giving me some advises? ... What SIM card is preferable and where can I buy it?

Will there a guide inside the SIM pack, so that I can input the APN, login and password.

Thanks again

When I look at the specs for this device I see it supports 900/1900/2100 Mhz for 3G? Do you also find this to be accurate?

If so, your only 3G option in Bangkok would be TOT or one of their resellers.

You can buy SIMs and top-up cards everywhere here; APN details are usually found in the package and/or on the websites.

For simplicity's sake, maybe go to MBK, 4th floor, Room 4DC-04 (opposite end from BTS), iMobile shop and get a iMobile 3GX SIM and associated package. Maybe bring the notebook and Modem; they will set it up for you.

The above link is all in Thai, I don't understand... Will MBK's staff speak English?

As I know, all I need is to change the APN for the SIM card in computer. All other items are keep unchanged, such as login, password. When I visit London, I had bought a "Pay as you go" 3 SIM card, I just change the APN is ok. So, if is something like that... I can do it in the Bangkok's hotel.

You can use the iFox/iKool option. It's a little cheaper than the iMobile option. If you want a Micro SIM the mobile phone outlet can cut the SIM to size for you.

The best options for you are the SIM with 1GB over 10 days for 199 baht or 5 GB over 30 days for 499 baht.

You can also create an account. Though for such a short stay it's probably unnecessary.

Thanks

Can I buy iFox/iKool in MBK too?.... All these SIM cards have user manual for the Mifi setting in the packs?

It's simple. Look here. IKool or iFox; it's the same.

Yes, the iMobile staff at the shop I recommended speak English; I wouldn't have recommended this provider, shop, location if I hadn't already been there myself, to purchase a pre-paid iMobile 3GX SIM and data plan. They installed, activated and verified the SIM/Service, although the instructions are included in the packaging. There are no shortage of retail outlets - every mall has 100's of mobile counter shops, and every convenience store (7/11, Family Mart, et al.) sells SIMs, TOT MVNOs (like iKool, 365, MoJo, iMobile, IEC) and data plans. My recommendation was an attempt to make it easy and straightforward.

Note that the steps are:

purchase SIM

purchase top-up credit

activate SIM (this may require a handset, hence better to have them do it at a shop; yes, this is described in the instructions)

select/activate a data plan

configure the device with APN and dial number if required (instructions)

check balance/expiration (instructions)

Hi Lomatpop,

Thanks again.

You are so kind and help me a lot. I will go to the shop in BMK that you have recommended.

In HK, it's hardly to ask the information of Bangkok SIM in many different forums. It's a great surprise for me when I have surf this "thaivisa". Besides, it's also my please to knowing you, many thanks

lomatopo,

I want to the shop last week and bought the iMobile 3GX. The staff help me to set my iPhone4. However, she told me that this SIM card did not support Huawei pocket wifi. So, I just using the iPhone for internet and share to another iPod device. The SIM card is not stable, but still OK for me.

I really want to use my pocket wifi in the trip, maybe next time. Many thanks

Sorry to hear about your problems.

1.) What exactly was the reason given for the stated lack of support for your Mifi device?

2.) Didn't know you had an iPhone 4; that can be turned into a WiFi hotspot, much like a WiFi device. Any reason not to use the iPhone as a hotspot?

3.) What does "not stable" mean exactly?

4.) Where were you located (generally) in Bangkok?

I can think of no reasons why the iMobile 3GX SIM would not work in your MiFi device. I have used an iMobile 3GX SIM, albeit in an air-card, successfully. I assume you tried it the SIM in your MiFi device, and experienced some failure mode? Can you share any details? This MiFI device has worked for you before, I assume? I guess you could try another TOT/MVNO SIM, or maybe by the time you visit next, an AIS/One-2-Call SIM, who seem to be rolling out 900 Mhz 3G in metro-Bangkok and other areas.

1.) The staff said that the SIM card would not support my pocket wifi, I had showed her my pocket wifi.

2.) I had used iPone4 as a hotspot, it worked successfully.

3.) Once I had closed the iPhone wifi, it would not detect the SIM card... had to reset the network of my iPhone4 again, I mean everytime. Even the staff also told me it this situation. Besides, some places in Bangkok couldn't detect the SIM card...

4.) I stayed in Bangkok only. Such as Paragon, China Town....

Due to iPhone4 could work properly, I didn't tried my pocket wifi after the staff told me the situation. But I think I should try it next time... I used this MiFi in Hong Kong and UK for about half year time, it worked properly.

Should I tried others SIM when I visit Bangkok next time?... Besides, I had asked truemove shop in Parargon, they told me that they did not had SIM card for MiFi, just provided login/password for users, 500MB for 30 days and could be used in shops or places where had truemove wifi signal.

OK, so you never really tried the iMobile 3GX SIM in your MiFi device? I suspect it will work, can't think of reasons why it wouldn't.

We've NEVER recommended Truemove to you so not sure why you'd venture there? They were referring to WiFI. Your MiFi device would not work on True's 3G network. Your iPhone would work on True's 3G network.

You can buy SIMs and top-up cards everywhere here: but maybe stick to the mobile phone shops in major malls, like MBK. If you can't find it there it doesn't exist.

I've provided many links in this thread which should be able to help you out re: other MVNOs operating on TOT (iMobile is a TOT MVNO). AIS is just starting to roll-out 3G in metro-Bangkok so it is too early to make any specific recommendations. Maybe check their website as your return gets closer.

I have the same Huawei MIFI (note the 'M'). Works flawlessly with AIS which sim cards can be bought from any main AIS shop.

I bought the sim and the MIFI at different places. When the AIS girl saw the MIFI she started shaking, and stuttering profusely, that is certainly wouldn't work. No, she had no idea what the MIFI was, but certainly it wouldn't work, sir, please get it out of this shop before I call the police. When I bought the sim card anyway, she made me kkneel infront of a Buddha statue and swear that I would not ask for my money back or blame them it it didn't work.

Put the sim in and connected without touching a single setting.

Also works with IEC sim card.

According to the specs, it'll support all bandwidths, including TRUE, though I have not tried the latter.

You can also try AIS 3G this time. Browse through lomatopo's threads for more info.

Thanks for youe advises, where can I buy the AIS 3G?

And, how much is the AIS 3G card?

Yes, AIS/One-2-Call recently launched 3G on 900 Mhz in Bangkok and many other areas in Thailand. The service seems to be getting mixed reviews so no guarantees.

You can buy any One-2-Call prepaid SIM, activate it in your telephone, add money, then subscribe to a data plan.

SIMs are generally 49 baht. You can buy these everywhere.

http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/internet-package/

example: 350 baht/30 days/1 GB subscribe: *133*22# SEND

Or just go with with one of the TOT resellers.

Why not just tether or hotspot your iPhone 4? It supports 850/900/1900/2100 Mhz 3G, so any/all providers? They all sell uSIMs.

Many thanks, my girl friend use iPhone, not me... I just have a pocket wifi only and have ipod + ipad (wifi version)

Last time, when I was using 3GX through iPhone 4, I need to reset the iPhone each time before tethering, a bit troublesome.

Hi Sarathi,

I will come to Bangkok this month, and will stay near Siam area. I want to try your sim this time, where can I buy it near Siam, BMK areas? Is there a name for this SIM card or any package?...

Using Mifi, we need the APN, will the shop tell me about it? Or, the SIM pack will include the APN setting? Many thanks.

Hi lomatopo,

I am in Bangkok now. I buy a 3GX Sim again and try it in my Mifi. Everything OK..... Many thanks.

I have asked dtac about the happy internet sim too. But the plan seems expensive, compare with 3GX Sim. And, the dtac staff will not help me to activate the happy sim.

For just a week, iMobile 3GX SIM is a good choice.
