My Govt would boost confidence: Yingluck

To reinvigorate the economy, prime-ministerial candidate Yingluck Shinawatra has set her sights on three main things - restoring confidence to boost consumption, strengthening the farm sector, and enhancing Thailand's potential as a tourist destination.

In an interview with Krungthep Turakij, Yingluck, No 1 on Pheu Thai's party list, said confidence was the key in economic policies. Low confidence in the country's direction leads to low investment and low consumption, though the financial system is flooded by liquidity and commercial banks' readiness to extend loans.

Without confidence, any policies, no matter how well they are designed, will be impractical, she said. In this regard, she believes that her experience from the business world will help her achieve her goals, with help from economic guru Olarn Chaipravat and marketing man Mingkwan Sangsuwan.

"Confidence is the most important thing. If the business sector and the general public are confident, with the government's assistance, investment and consumption will rise given huge savings," she said.

In light of this, a Pheu Thai-led government would cut the corporate income-tax rate from 30 per cent currently to 23 per cent in the first year and to 20 per cent in the second year.

This drives us to announce the policy to cut the corporate tax income rate (from 30 per cent) to 23 per cent in the first year and 20 per cent in the second year," she said in the interview.

As the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee will meet today on the policy rate, Yingluck said interest rates were likely to move in line with inflation. She noted that the current policy rate was not too high, compared with the past. Moreover, once people's incomes rise, they will not mind higher interest rates.

"I was in the property-development industry. I know that though interest rates are a factor influencing home-buyers, they are not the principal factor. More influence will come from their expectation of future income," she said.

On farmers' well-being, she said her government's policies would be comprehensive, ranging from strengthening their income to enhancing the food-processing industry's competitiveness.

Believing that income distribution remains a flaw as reflected by low labour wages despite the overall improvement in the economy, she said this led to huge problems when the poor had to endure higher good prices. This in turn led to higher household debts.

She said a boost to incomes was a must. This would be done through government investment in mega-projects, which should lead to higher employment.

Pheu Thai would also launch a debt moratorium for farmers and the poor whose household debt is less than Bt500,000.

A rice-price-guarantee scheme would help ensure farmers' income, while labourers are promised a Bt300 daily minimum wage. This would be complemented by a minimum-income guarantee of Bt15,000 per month for all new graduates.

To guarantee that all can find jobs, Pheu Thai promises Bt1 billion in funding to each university to help new entrepreneurs set up businesses.

While promising more policies to boost the popularity of tourist attractions, she said Pheu Thai would also focus on expanding the railway network. The party would proceed with plans to increase the urban rail lines in Greater Bangkok to 10 and commuters are promised a Bt20 daily fare.

Meanwhile, high-speed trains will link Bangkok and major cities such as Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Hua Hin. The Airport Rail Link will be extended to Chachoengsao, Chon Buri and Pattaya.

"My experience of more than 10 years in business will be applied in implementing political policies," she said.

Yingluck believes that good policies and assistance from such experts as Olarn and Mingkwan would help her government get the best out of the recent global financial crisis, which has resulted in more volatile capital flows.

"The most important thing is implementation. I do believe that my business experience will help, particularly in assessing and analysing problems.

"Certainly, behind the policy to have eggs sold by the kilogram is a lack of understanding. Naturally, eggs are fragile and thus they should not be sold by the kilo," she said, attacking the arch-rival Democrat Party.

How very inconvenient for PTP. <_<

Whether to claim it's all due to the Thaksin/TRT policies of 2001-2006, or say it's not true & all smoke-and-mirrors, and anyway what do these farang news-channels know about Thailand, it's a tricky call. :(

''Low confidence in the country's direction leads to low investment''

i read in the other paper yesterday that morgan stanley and a couple of other major traders were advising clients to sell thai stocks and take their profits

they intimated that confidence was low for the future if PT got in

they weren't advising sell even when the reds were in full revoltionary mode

so her statement today may be a self fulfilling prophecy

maybe PT should sue them for saying that or threaten that if they get in, they will be out, for talking bad about them?

wow some diverse projects there

Dams, trains, corporate tax levels, minimum wages, fixed incomes, education funding

then the biggest and most important issue of all, eggs!

she obviously does not buy eggs herself

even if these fragile eggs are bought by the kilo, amazingly they can still be put in egg boxes so they don't get broken

the wonders of modern technology............

He says as income distribution and regional wealth and income disparity worsens widening social divisions.

How does "fixing" an economy that doesn't need fixing affect those things?

So if corporate taxes are reduced by a third, who is going to take on the extra weight in needed revenue for the mega projects? If the rich people are going to pay less taxes that leaves the middle and lower classes to carry the burden, is it not so?

Of course confidence is low - with her militant wing burning down half of the capitol city last year and all the protests, shootings and noise they are making, its obvious that there would be low confidence in the country.

Stop protesting on the streets and fight the political battles in parliament like an opposition party should do, and the confidence will rise... win the election through legitimate means (no vote buying, no intimidation of your opposition party or threats against voters if they don't vote for you) and confidence may rise. Leave criminals in exile instead of openly planning to bring them back, and confidence may rise.

Or just blame it on eggs, whichever works for you!

Thailand has published unemployment figures for the past few years, that indicate there is virtually 100% employment. Who are the potential employees to handle all these planned projects?

You want to help the farmers, invest money in farmer operated/controlled cooperatives who would compete with the middlemen who presently control/sell the supplies needed by the farmers and the control/purchasing of farm products grown by the farmers.

Farm product prices have risen over the past 2 to 3 years to a pre/early Thaksin level. Knock out the middle men who are bleeding the farmers/country blind and you have 2 groups of potential voters you could bring into your ranks. (producer, consumers)

So this lady's mentor is the man whose ideas on good corporate management resembled a dictatorship? A man who surrounded himself with 'yes men' and didn't tolerate alternative points of view or dissent. A man who implemented a health system that nearly bankrupted the State hospitals, caused pharmaceutical companies to stop supplying products and whose costs to the patient where swamped by the cost of collecting the patients contribution. Some commercial and industrial genius. Not. Even the Thaksin supporters that I speak to admit that he was a corrupt crook - but he help the poor people they bleat. Nobody to date has given me a credible instance of his benefice.

I doubt that what Thailand needs right now is somebody straight out of the Gordon Brown mould. As others have pointed out where is the money coming from to pay for these grandiose schemes? Will the super rich be taxed until their pips squeak? Will the Damapong and Shinawatra billions also be subject to a gross reduction to help replenish Government coffers? ALL Thai people, not just successive Governments, need to acquaint themselves with, and observe, the Micawber Principle.

"Annual income, £20.00, expenditure £19.95, result happiness; annual income £20.00, expenditure £20.05, result misery."

Pheu Thai pledges 'energy' credit cards

By The Nation

Published on June 1, 2011

Pheu Thai has promised to issue "energy" credit cards to drivers of taxis, motorcycle taxis and commuter vans if the party is elected to lead the next government.

In light of the positive response to issuing credit cards for farmers, public transport workers should be entitled a roving credit to refuel their vehicles, Pheu Thai campaign strategist Pichai Naripthaphan said yesterday.

The credit limit would equal the average monthly spending on petrol and natural gas, he said.

The party will negotiate with energy suppliers to provide a special discount and cumulative points for each card, he said, explaining that the points could be redeemed for benefits similar to a pension scheme.nationlogo.jpg

I am reminded of the old political promise of " A chicken in every pot". If it would/could have happened there would be no more eggs, thus no more chicken. Greed will bring out the worst in potentially honest/uninformed people, but those who knowingly promise the utterly impossible set both the upper/lower limit for complete self serving corrupt individuals.

My Govt would boost confidence: Yingluck

The other newspaper in a flash with 'Ms. Yingluck vague on BJT' also has 'too early to talk about it', 'dodged questions on most other issues', 'declined to comment', 'did not want to say' and finishing with 'She maintained that any decision on the future would be made by her and the party'

Well, I don't know about you girls and guys here, but my confidence is really boosted ;)
