Hello,

Anyone know how long it takes to process a Thai work permit (non-immigrant B visa) in Shanghai?

I am an American and just started a job in Bangkok and since I need to fly to Shanghai for a conference my company wants my work visa processed there.

Thank you very much.

Work permits are only issued in Thailand by department of labour, cannot be done in Shanghai

Non-imm B is not a work permit, but this visa can be obtained in Shanghai and would take two days to issue.

You say you are working in BKK already....you may in fact be working illegally..

Thank you very much for the quick response.

Let me clarify that I have not yet begun to work, actually here on a Tourist Visa until I get my non-imm visa but have attended a few company/international wide meetings that does not classify as working.

Regarding your timeline, do you mean I can drop off paperwork in the morning and then pickup the visa next afternoon (1 day), or an actual 2 days in between?

Thanks again for your help!

Still it is better to apply for the WP now. You won't get the WP, but instead a WP3 form that indicates you have applied for the WP and will get it when you have the right visa. In the area, many Thai consulates prefer if you have this form.

Actually depending on the official you deal with what you are going could be interpreted as working...but thats by the by, another debate all together

Can drop paperwork off in morning and pick up next day usually afternoon..

Also take note of what "Mario2008" is telling you, you most likely will need to turn up in Shanghai with the WP3 form in hand along with all the other paper work you will need for the application, you are aware that you need Thai entity (company) "sponsership" for this process.

yes, i was told this already. but do you know how long the visa itself will take?

thank you.

You must apply for the work permit first and get a WP3 form. Without that, there is a strong chance you will not get a non-B visa.

Already answered....drop morning one day, usually pick up following afternoon, provided all your paperwork is stright...

Seconded....it is unlikely that a Non-B will be issued by any of the Consulates in China without the WP3. Additionally it seems their requirements are more stringent than most. As an example this is the list a friend of mine was given by the Guangzhou Consulate a few months ago:

NON “B” Visa - Royal Thai Consulate General, Guangzhou

Documents Required:

Visa application form completely filled out

Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months

Five recent photographs of applicant (4×6 cm)

Full paid confirmed air ticket

Applicant’s identity card and its copy

Company’s letter of certification stating the applicant’s position, salary and purpose of stay in the Kingdom

Copy of the company’ business license

Letter of acceptance from the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare

Original letter of a company or issued by the Thai authorities concerned (either in Thai or English ) notifying the name and position of the undersigned and stating the objective of the applicant’s visit, duration of stay and assumption of responsibility during his/her stay

Copy of identity card of the person extending the invitation

Copy of the passport page which his/her photograph is attached, copy of the passport page which his/her visa is attached, copy of work permit ( only for foreigner extending the invitation )

Copy of the company’s incorporation registration certificate

Copy of letter of certification of company registration declaring the names of the directors and objectives of the company’s establishment

Document showing correspondence with trading partners in Thailand

Company’s employment contract indicating rationale for hiring the applicant as well as his/her salary, position and qualifications

Work permit ( in case the applicant previously worked in the Kingdom )

Copy of educational records of the applicant and letters of recommendation from the prior employers, identifying job description and length of service time

Document indicating the number of foreign tourists (for tourist business only ), or document indicating export transactions issued by banks (for export business only )

Evidence of adequate finance (20,000Baht per person and 40,000Baht per family)

Documents must be signed by authorized managing director and affixed the seal of the company

Consular officers reserve the rights to request for additional documents as deemed necessary

Copy required:

- One copy of air ticket

- Four copies of the passport page which his/her photograph is attached

Can't imagine that Shanghai will ask for less than this!

Maybe prudent to contact the Consulate to verify the latest requirements.
