Pheu Thai Party leader Yongyuth Wichaidit insisted on Friday that Yingluck Shinawatra is the only candidate for prime minister if his party wins the election.

Yongyuth said he was not ready to take the post in place of Yingluck and stressed he would definitely not accept it.

Yingluck, younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin, is number one on Pheu Thai's party-list, while Yongyuth is second.

During an exclusive interview with The Nation today, Yongyuth, one of Thaksin's most trusted close aides, rebutted expectations that he might be put forward as another candidate for PM in the event that Yingluck cannot take the post.

"If we do that (let another person be the PM candidate instead of Yingluck), it means we have deceived the people," he said referring to the party's election campaign that promotes Yingluck for the top administrative post.

When asked whether he was ready were the party to propose him, Yongyuth said, "No, I'm not ready. And I won't accept the post.

"I'm 100 per cent sure that if Pheu Thai wins (the election) Yingluck will certainly be the prime minister. Like driving a car, if we are really careful, we can avoid accidents and surely reach our office. We are careful at every moment so that we can avoid (political) accidents. The road now is not so smooth. It's dangerous and we are more careful. I assure you (Yingluck) won't miss the post," he said.

Questioned as whether it is possible that Pheu Thai might be requested to change its PM candidate given that Yingluck is Thaksin's sister, Yongyuth said, "Rules are rules. The rules say the people decide, we have to accept the people's decision.

"In a football match, the audience watch the match from around the pitch. If we win by 1:0, how can it be said that we've lost the game? Everybody talks about good governance, this is good governance," he said.

On the party's announcement yesterday (Thursday) that it would not join a coalition government with the Bhum Jai Thai Party for this election, Yongyuth, who signed the announcement, said it was the decision of Pheu Thai's executives, not Thaksin's.

"We must decide on own own. How can Thaksin give the order? We are in the contest and we knew we couldn't avoid making this declaration, otherwise people might be confused," he said.

Just like he doesn't want to be leader of the party.
