'Multicolours' launch graft campaign on Yingluck

By The Nation

The so-called "multicolour" shirts yesterday launched a signature campaign to initiate graft proceedings against Pheu Thai candidate Yingluck Shinawatra and her brother Thaksin Shinawatra.

The campaign, spearheaded by Tul Sitthisomwong, will set up a table to solicit signatures at Thammasat University on June 18.

Tul said he wanted the Department of Special Investigation to probe Yingluck as a nominee in the asset concealment case involving ex-PM Thaksin and his family.

In a separate probe, the DSI should investigate Thaksin's involvement in graft related to the approval of a Bt1-billion loan to Burma in a telecommunications deal and his meddling in Krung Thai Bank loans for property development, he said.

DSI director-general Tharit Pengdit said the case, known as "share concealment part two", had been dropped due to weak evidence.

The case was lodged by the Securities and Exchange Commission on suspicion that Thaksin and his ex-wife Khunying Pojaman na Pombejra had manipulated Shin Corp share prices with insider information. The shares were allegedly distributed among nominees to cover up ill-gotten gains.

Health Dept urges people to recycle, reuse

By The Nation

30156974-01.jpg

In a recent survey, the Health Department found that Thailand generates more than 46 million tonnes of garbage and infectious waste every day.

The department also found that 6 to 7 per cent of this waste comprised of hazardous materials such as fluorescent tubes and spray can.

Pittsanu Saenprasert, director of the Department's Environmental Health Bureau, said about 90 per cent of the things thrown away could be reused and that 14 per cent could be recycled. In a move to cut down on the waste generated, he said, the department would launch a campaign urging hospitals and healthcare units across the country to reuse and recycle materials.

"We expect to reduce waste by more than 84,000 tonnes this year," he said.

Some of the reusable waste materials will be donated to Wat Suan Kaew Temple and other foundations to be reproduced as roofs and other commodities to help people affected by natural disasters. So far, the department has collected a little more than 26,000 tonnes of reusable garbage.

Stateless to sue Interior Ministry

By The Nation

TAK - A group of 74 stateless persons yesterday urged the working team providing legal assistance to stateless Thais in Tak's Mae Sot and Mae Ramat districts to file a complaint at the Central Administration Court against the Interior Ministry for dragging feet in granting Thai nationality to 2,984 stateless people.

The group representatives would also accompany the working team to file the complaint in Bangkok on June 27. The group claimed that the Interior Ministry had taken their cases since December 30, 2004, but hadn't announced it in the Royal Gazette yet. Many of the stateless people, who submitted their documents and underwent the Thai citizen vowing ceremony already, still didn't get the nationality, whilst some got it.

Suriyasai sues New Politics chief for libel

By The Nation

New Politics Party secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila yesterday filed a police complaint accusing party leader Somsak Kosaisuk of defamation.

In his statement to the Crime Suppression Division, Suriyasai said Somsak had made two separate remarks designed to tarnish his reputation.

In the first comment, Somsak raised a false charge about his involvement in the Bt650,000 embezzlement of funds donated to the party, he said.

In the second comment, Somsak acted with malicious intent in spreading a false claim that he was no longer the party secretary-general, he said.

His row with Somsak stemmed from his opposition to the party taking part in the July 3 general election, he said, arguing that Somsak wanted to undermine his credibility and push him out of the party so as to contest the election.

"Somsak has changed and is no longer the man I knew," he said, ruling out any mediation attempts for an out-of-court settlement.

Panel to test E-Sarn varsity graduates

By The Nation

The special committee to tackle the ESarn University's alleged teaching diploma selling will visit the university next Thursday to check on the 527 graduates, who studied on campus.

Those deemed to be qualified would be proposed for the diploma certification so they could use it in teacher licence application, while those notyetqualified would get to study more courses, said the committee chairman Anon Thiengtrong yesterday. As for other 1,247 graduates and students at offcampus classes, the committee would probe their student registration information first.

By June 22, the committee should have progress on the university's asset checking, student registration information checking, and a list of the graduates who were cleared of this fiasco for further assistance.
