Wrong time to seek meeting with Prayuth : army spokesman

By The Nation

This is the wrong time for Pheu Thai candidate Yingluck Shinawatra to seek a meeting with Army Commander in Chief Gen Prayuth Chanocha, Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Monday.

Thailand is in the middle of an election campaign and Gen Prayuth is a government officer so he will certainly be criticised of not being neutral if he were seen meeting with Yingluck, Sansern said.

The spokesman was responding to reports that Yingluck, the no 1 party list candidate, is seeking to meet Prayuth to talk about the current political situation. If Pheu Thai wins a majority in the general election on July 3, she will be Thailand's first female prime minister.

"It is not the proper time for any political parties to meet Gen Prayuth to discuss anything. There are many parties, so the army chief could be criticised for meeting with just one party. Questions would also be asked as to whether it would be possible for other parties to meet with him," the spokesman said.

Sansern said Prayuth has not commented on the matter. "Gen Prayuth has repeatedly said that the military would act according to the election laws as they, like other ordinary people, have to be under the law."

The military does however allow political parties taking part in the election to campaign in its compound.

If there is a request from a party to campaign inside any army unit, the army will notify to the Election Commission before deciding whether to approve it or not.

Yingluck’s planned visit to army chief deemed inappropriate

news2011-06-06_11-31-49_255406060007_ColSansern2.JPG

BANGKOK, 6 June 2011 (NNT) – The army has deemed inappropriate Pheu Thai Party prime minister candidate Yingluck Shinawatra’s suggestion to meet with Army Commander-In-Chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha.

Army Spokesperson Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd stated that General Prayut himself has not made any comment about this issue. He said the army chief however has been reiterating that everything that the military will do must comply with the electoral law.

Ms Yingluck earlier announced that she wished to meet with General Prayut in person to seek advices regarding the situation in Thailand, if allowed, after the army chief made some comments regarding the general election.

Colonel Sansern added that what the army can do to promote the election is to let political parties conduct election campaigns in army camps; however, allowing a particular party to have personal consultation with the army chief is inappropriate as other parties might request the same thing and more problems would follow.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the army is willing to support the election, and political parties are welcomed to elaborate their policies with personnel in military camps.

Army Spokesman: Pheu Thai Top Candidate's Visit with Army Chief Not Appropriate

The army spokesperson stressed it is highly inappropriate for the number one party-list candidate of Pheu Thai to have a private meeting with the Army chief as the general election approaches.

Army spokesperson Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd insisted it is inappropriate for Pheu Thai number one party-list candidate Yingluck Shinawatra to have a private meeting with Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Yingluck has requested to meet with Prayuth to discuss and ask for his advice on various issues concerning the country.

Sansern said such a meeting could spark public criticisms against the army chief since the campaign for the general election has already begun.

In addition, if Yingluck is granted the opportunity to meet with the army chief, any other political parties must be able to do so as well.

The army spokesman added that the army chief has always made it clear that soldiers must respect the electoral law and be able to differentiate between their role as a soldier and a Thai citizen.

But, Sansern added that political parties are welcomed to hold campaign events at any military bases.

The request for campaign events to be held at military locations will be forwarded to the local office of the Election Commission for approval.

Sorry I can't meet you, I'm a little busy at the moment deciding who will be the next leader...

Posted (edited)

it shows how inexperienced and insensitive these reds and their campaign managers are

apart from it being totally inappropriate, do the reds think the army have forgotten about their fallen comrades that were killed during their attempted revolution?

personally i would not p*ss on a red if one were on fire at my feet......

Bungalow - I know you love the red shirts but to use the same subversive bullying and intindation that they use on an expat internet forum is very council house!!!!

Please for once in your life try and post a sensible coherent argument and instead of bullying and flaming, try and respect other peoples views - not even Shinawatra shows the same disrespect that YOU do!!!!!!!

I really enjoy your contribution on this forum.

I have a minor challenge for you, as this is not yet clear to me.

Why are you so supportive of miss Yingluck. What is it in her, or her policies that attract you so much?

Do you dare to reply?

Its the fact that he can use her to try and troll and flame other users of this forum - get them to bite - and get into trouble - he doesnt understand the first thing about the red shirts just that theres a name out there called Yingluck and people dont like it - so wind them up with it!!!

The military just threw a press conference a few days ago to address this very issue, saying that this exact thing would be inappropriate. Did this simple instruction not register? Does she not care about the in propriety or even the appearance of in propriety during this election or was she just following orders?

On viewing the posts on this and similar threads it would seem to me that 8 out of 10 (80%) of posters are anti Thaksin and the red shirts, some vehemently, so calling him a liar, cheat, murderer, thief and the red shirts a bunch of thugs, murderous hooligans, and so on and so on.

I just wonder what would happen should Thaksin come back under amnesty or whatever. What would be the attitude of the posters then should he regain power? I'm sure that forums such as these are monitored by all parties. Would those that are so vociferous now change their point of view, pull in their horns, crawl into the woodwork, would the moderators have to amend the rules as with other unmentionable subjects if they should come under pressure from a Thaksin led government? Bears thinking about.

Personally i wouldnt change my opinion of Thaksin - and its strange that you think we should fear anything rom the one whose lips so often carry the word "democracy". But could it be that the red shirt fraternity KNOW full well that hes' a murdering dictator just like they know who fired the M79 grenades in Sillom and who killed the Japanese reporter??

Am I missing something here? The leader of the main opposition party and potential future Prime Minister seeks a meeting with General Prayuth, and that is controversial?

she's very smart, i think that abhisit is the one who needs a debate ,not she, abhisit needs to increse his popularity while yingluck is becoming more and more popular among the voters, and what is even more dangerous to abhisit, the popularity of yingluck is going up among the residents of BKK.

bungalownights - one of the few intelligent posts on this thread so far.

OK so now weve dismissed your lie can we get back to the original question that he asked you?:ermm:

Its as if the Army chief is pretending to play the Mr Innocent card.

"Me involved in politics ? ..... never....."

Yes, the 'inappropriateness' of any party's meeting with the army does tend to suggest that the good general has an inappropriate association with the nation's system of government.

Perhaps it should bear thinking about that antagonising a certain group could lead to repercussions. Thaksin made life in Thailand more difficult with his immigration regulation changes. Should he get to receive many more posts of the sort you have been posting could easily exacerbate the situation. By all means criticise in a non inflammatory manner, but I consider posts that an elected official may consider to be over the top to be unhelpful. Don't rock the boat too much.

Why would she need to seek a meeting with him during an election? Shame she cant share her thirst and demand for debate with Mr Abhisit live on TV!! "What will she say to him? "ill get my big brother onto you if you dont start liking me!!"

nope, that was everything

Maybe she wants assurances from the army that there won't be a coup if she wins?

Not an unreasonable thing to ask before an election.

It would be too late after.

Only in this respect. Everyone knows if she were to meet with him it would be solely for the purposes of holding a press conference afterwards to announce that she urged the general in the most strenuous terms to please not interfere either in the election or its aftermath. Good PR opportunity I suppose but what other purpose might the meeting serve?

You really think they don't already have communication channels with the military?

Exactly. This is about face making, and making it look like the army is accepting them. No one wins in the long run without tacit army backing if they expect to get hard things done, and not just warm seats, so making tie-ins PUBLICLY is part of the power play. Back room dealing is going on full tilt one way or another.

So they are keeping her at arms length, for the time being. No sense looking too cosy, or giving appearances of being in bed together with ANY players, this early.
