Youtuber 'Discovers' Alien Space Station On Mars

So if you haven't already seen it, it's only a matter of minutes until your crazy aunt or high school science teacher e-mails you a link to the YouTube video now going hyper-viral worldwide which purports to show an alien "space station" or "base" approximately 750 feet in length located on Mars. (He found the image while playing around with Google Mars imagery and his "discovery" has been seconded by other Google Mars users.)

The last time I watched the video it was at the 775K mark; now it has been viewed nearly 1.2 million times. Watch the full clip directly below.

My unbiased thoughts on the matter:

1. At distant resolution, the object does appear to be a cylindrical, man-made (or Decepticon-made!) facility, no doubt about it.

2. As he continues to zoom in, however, it becomes more fragmented/blurry, lending credibility to the official explanation that this is merely an imaging artifact caused by a cosmic ray or something similar -- the high-tech deep space equivalent of a smudge on the lens.

3. It is odd that just hours after the video was posted to YouTube, its creator was killed in a fatal auto accident. OK, I totally just made that one up to give you goosebumps -- but judging from the YouTube comments section, this video is already generating a wide range of conspiracy theories and alternate explanations.

4. In summary, your guess is probably as good as mine! If aliens are going to build an ugly base, however, I'd much rather it be built on distant Mars than here in the US of A.

4b. When this guy called the discovery "Bio Station Alpha," I totally laughed out loud -- he reminds me a bit of the "Double Rainbow" guy made famous by Jimmy Kimmel (and others) not long ago.
