Egypt's former ministers officially imprisoned

2011-06-07 22:26:03 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- Egypt's minister of interior confirmed on Tuesday that convicted former ministers have been moved to start their sentences, Ahram online reported.

Minister of Interior Mansour El-Eissawi said that Habib El-Adly, former minister of interior; Zohair Garana, former minister of tourism and Ahmed El-Maghrabi, former housing minister have been moved within Tora Prison from their holding cells to start their sentences, a few weeks after they were handed down.

El-Maghrabi was sentenced to five years in jail for wasting and expropriating public funds to further his private interests. Garana and El-Adly were also sentenced to five years and 12 years in prison respectively for corruption, profiteering and other charges.

El-Adly was also accused for the killing of peaceful protesters, damaging public and private property, creating a security vacuum by ordering the police to evacuate and set fire to their own buildings during the January revolution, and terrorizing citizens.

El-Eissawi also confirmed that ousted president Hosni Mubarak will be moved to Tora Prison if so ordered by the prosecutor-general.

Mubarak ruled Egypt in a 30-year-long regime which began in 1981. He stepped down this year after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.

An Egyptian court announced last week that Mubarak will stand trial for corruption and murder charges on August 3.
