Closest entry point to Vietnam from Thailand by land ? Should cross Lao or Cambodia ?

What is the shortest way to Vietnam by land from any Thai airport ?

Imagine that you would like to go to Vietnam by land.

Which Thai airport is the closest to any entry point in Vietnam ?

I know that i will have to cross Lao first, and then arrive in Vietnam, but I cannot find the easiest way to do this by land.

Or maybe i should cross Cambodia ?

The closest place in Thailand to Vietnam would be Nakhon Phanom in the north east. As the crow flies it is about 100ks across Laos to VN. Probably five times that distance on the ground via Route 12 across the Lao mountains.

I've no idea if there is a bus or similar on the route.

If you go to Mukdahan in Isaan and cross the second Friendship Bridge to Savanakhet in Laos you can then get a bus to Vietnam and it's only four hours I believe.

Hanoi - i got a bus from Vien Tian,Laos. took me more than 24 hrs on a sleeping bus = B500. it takes too long. buses leave at 17.30 -18.00

try to intercept a bus from Tah Chilek,Laos+ Nakorn panom,North East, ...... i guess. or mukda harn

Lang Po No / Lao Bau on Highway 9 through to Quang Tri
