The history of Lom Sak area dates back to the founding time of the Sukhothai kingdom in the 13th century. The governor of Mueang Rat (Lom Sak), Pho Khun Pha Mueang (พ่อขุนผาเมือง), was one of Thai warlords who defeated the Khmer from Siamese area. When Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao (พ่อขุนบางกลางหาว) and him established Sukhothai kingdom, he supported his friend to be the first king because his wife was Khmer.

In 1767 in the reign of King Taksin the Great, Phraya Chakri (the later King Rama I) return from his expedition to Vientiane through the area of present day Lom Kao district. Some of people from Vientiane settled their new town there. When the new town grew bigger, they moved their town to the plain near the Pa Sak River and named the new town Lom Sak. Later other Lao from Vientiane, who were forced by King Taksin to settle around Lopburi, returned and joined Lom Sak.

According to the historian Prince Damrong Rajanubhab the Mueang Lom Sak was officially established in the reign of King Nangklao (Rama III). When King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) created the Monthon as part of the thesaphiban administrative reforms, Mueang Lom Sak was controlled by Monthon Phetchabun. Later it was downgraded to be a district of Phetchabun province. In 1916 the district was named Wat Pa (วัดป่า). The name of district was changed back to Lom Sak on November 11, 1938.

In the 1970s the hills of Lom Sak were one of the strongholds of the guerilla of the Communist Party of Thailand.

I really appreciate posts like this. I didn't know. You provide an idea for a visit that one just doesn't get from guidebooks. Even my Thai friends don't know. Thank you

It's in every guidebook I've ever seen for Bangkok...it's actually called Ancient City.

http://www.ancientcity.com/en

Fascinating. My wife had never heard about it either. They obviously don't promote very well within the kingdom.

We'll have to make a trip out there sometime. Wonder if they practice dual pricing, and if they will give me any grief over requesting the local price with my Thai DL?

Posted

According to their website, they practice TRIPLE pricing (so not only foreigners can be incensed, Thais can too!):

400 baht for foreigners

200 baht for Thais

100 baht for Thai residents of Samut Prakan Province

Not sure if DL, work permit, etc. will work. It has been ages since I was there and don't recall.

PS: I too am surprised that the Ancient City is new to anyone - certainly I've known about it for a very long time and its typically promoted at travel agencies and (as mentioned) in guidebooks.

Turn left along the old Sukhumvit road (towards Bangpoo) Until you get to km33 Ancient Siam is on the left. It is Open 08.00-am till 17-00pm

If you go buy bus, it is air conditioned no 5119 (Pimkloa-Praknam) to the end of the line, from there take a mini bus No 36. it passes the entrance to Ancient Siam.

Its a shame that there are not many TV adverts about this place because its fantastic, and they need the tourists, When we where there back in April we visited the traditional Thai Village that is inside Ancient Siam. you can watch them tend Buffalo. and watch shop keepers along with traditional Musicians, its not just buildings , there is a small floating market, Thai restaurants, many gardens and plenty of places to get drinks. we found all the Thai people friendly and helpfully. We cannot say enough good things about the place , we will be visiting the place again because we cannot get enough of the place,

How do you put a price on 100s of years of history, people don't complain about prices when they sit and drink beer all day. i would pay 1000 baht just to see this place

Great video Tywais. You have just pist me off , i am sat here in the UK On my computer looking at your fantastic video looking out the window and its raining ,

On the contrary. Tywais is innocent. Your angst is self inflicted. If you are still resident in a grey country, that has been overrun by foreigners whose cultures take precedence over everything else, where you are assailed by the nanny State (but without scruples in freezing paid for State pensions of those daring to retire to somewhere more congenial), where City Centres are unsafe at night and the feckless freeloaders live on handouts, you have only yourself to blame. :jap:

This place has raised my interest and I am now planning a visit with 'the boss'. Although it may well rankle I will cough up the 400 baht to enter although the driving licence will be produced just in case somebody recognises that more money from my pockets goes in Government coffers that those of the vast majority of Thais..

I've removed the majority of the bitching about dual pricing and responses to them as it is off topic and not productive. Interesting topic, let's keep it that way.
