BARCELONA, SPAIN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 36 people were injured on Wednesday after clashes between police officers and 15-M protesters in the Spanish city of Barcelona, the El Mundo newspaper reported.

An estimated 2,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the entrance of the Catalonian Parliament in Barcelona to protest against lawmakers who gathered to discuss a series of cuts on social programs.

Artur Mas, President of the autonomous community Generalitat of Catalonia, said that the protests were out of control and the use of force may be necessary. Mas had to be flown by helicopter in order to enter the Parliament.

"I prefer a democratic system with some flaws instead of the violent chaos that occurred today," said the Catalonian leader. "I ask for the citizens' understanding in a case that the legitimate use of force is used."

Despite that many lawmakers managed to enter the Catalonian Parliament, the scheduled session had to be cancelled as many of them could not gain access to the building due to the mass demonstration.

President Mas argued that the situation was caused by a "relatively small groups" which have provoked an exceptional atmosphere as lawmakers and Parliament staff members were attacked by protesters as they arrived to work.

"The acts committed this morning by protesters, such as throwing objects at lawmakers, are not administrative offenses, they are indeed crimes," added Mas. "The situation is sad and embarrassing."

Of the 36 injured, about 12 of them are police officers and three were reported to be in a critical condition. Authorities used eight helicopters to transport lawmakers to the Catalonian Parliament. In addition, approximately 450 law agents were deployed in the area.

Last Saturday, Spanish police forcefully dispersed protesters rallying near the Madrid city hall as the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, took office. The demonstration was also organized by the 15-M protest movement.

At least six people received minor injuries after riot police tried to evict them. Protesters also gathered in other cities around the country as politicians began new terms after the municipal elections on May 22.

On June 9, at least 18 people were injured when police clashed with protesters in Valencia near the regional parliament building as new legislators, many of whom are facing corruption charges, were due to take office.

The 15-M protest movement was launched last May before the elections to demand a reform of Spain's democratic system. Last month, at least 100 people were injured after police tried to disperse protesters in Barcelona to end two weeks of demonstrations against high unemployment and the Spanish government's austerity measures.
