I know its not Thai related but still interesting to see what's going on around us :D

SINGTEL is tweaking its mobile broadband service to give customers on its higher-end plans a faster, more reliable connection on the go.

Singapore's biggest telco has also disclosed, for the first time, the average mobile broadband access speeds its customers can expect when they plug a dongle into their notebook computers to surf the Internet.

The company's executive vice president of digital consumers, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, said it had 'seen a sharp rise in mobile data usage with the explosive growth of new web-enabled devices and bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications'.

In view of 'the rapidly growing number of customers who are demanding higher speeds with more consistent performance', it decided to roll out the new, faster service to customers on its mid-and-high end 7.2 and 21Mbps mobile broadband services.

SingTel has about 870,000 customers who use the thumb-sized plug-in mobile broadband modem known as a dongle to surf the Internet, the bulk of them on its entry level 3.6Mbps service which will not get the speed boost.

In support of the new initiative, and also in response to consumer and regulatory concerns over what consumers are really getting, SingTel is also disclosing the typical speeds consumers of those services can expect. Those using its 3.6Mbps service can expect to surf at speeds between 0.8Mbps and 2.1Mbps; those using its 7.2Mbps service will enjoy speeds of 1.4Mbps to 3.7Mbps; and premium customers on its 21Mbps service will blaze along at between 1.7Mbps and 4.8Mbps speeds.

it doesn't really make sense, does it?

Yeah it does. 21 is just the max. speed, sounds like SingTel is serious about telling their customers what they can reasonably expect. That's rather unique around the world as very few mobile operators bother with such details. 1.7 - 4.8 Mbps is pretty good speed for mobile, and I am guessing it will be higher if you're lucky (e..g you are the only mobile internet user on a given cell).

I was getting 2 - 3 Mbit real world speed in BKK on True 3G yesterday, I was amazed [i have MenuMeters which shows me the sent/received data rate in the menu bar, updated every second).
