Prisoners in Narathiwat riot after drug seizures

NARATHIWAT, June 18 -- Twenty-six prison and police officials were injured early Saturday after prisoners in the southern province of Narathiwat threw stones, scrap iron and wooden planks at them following the seizure of a quantity of drug inside the prisoners' sleeping ward, officials said.

The violence occurred at about 7am after more than 150 prison officials and combined government forces searched the sleeping ward and ordered all 999 male prisoners at the prison to gather at the lawn while the search was in progress.

Authorities initially found a quantity of methamphetamine pills, crystal methamphetamine, also known as 'ice,' and a number of mobile phones hidden inside the prisoners' sleeping ward, officials said.

While the investigation was continuing, a number of prisoners on charges of violating the country's security shouted at other prisoners to rebel and attack the officials. The prisoners then threw stones, scrap iron and wooden planks at the officials, injuring 26 of them, 11 seriously.

All the injured prison officials were later sent to the hospital for treatment.

Narathiwat governor Thanon Vejjakornkanond and Pol Maj Gen Yongyuth Charoenvanich, deputy commander of Police Southern Border Provinces Operation Centre, later talked to the frenzied prisoners to return to their wards while officials discontinued the search.

Officials said an investigatory committee would be set up to probe how drug from outside were able to reach prisoners and through which channels.

Presently, there are 999 male and 84 female prisoners at the prison. A plan is being drawn up to build a new prison in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district, as the present one in the provincial seat is considered overcrowded but the budget has not been allocated yet.

After the new prison is constructed, the current prison is to be turned into a public park. (MCOT online news)
