Doggy Toruble

Past years have been no trouble here in Surin, but this year our dogs have masses of ticks (Th:how).

Does any know of a good way to get rid of them? Something like a powder would be ideal. Help and the name of anything that works would be most appreciated.

Go to Pharmacy and buy, Thai people know that already 100's of years what to do...

But here is easy way,,, Benzyl benzoate Lotion (Source: US Pharmacopia Volume XXIV)

or you can make it by your self, really simple:

Remember first you have to buy following items

Simply mix Triethanolamine 0.25 g with Oleic acid 1 g in 100 ml bottle. Shake well to form soap. Add Benzyl benzoate and mix throughly. Add 12.5 ml of puried water and mix. Add purified water to make 50 ml of lotion.

Should help :o

A trip to your local vet would get you the droplets that you apply just once every 3 months, these used to be quite dangerous for the dogs (and cats) but have since become safe.

Here's a link to an Ebay page to see what is available - just print out the product you want and take it to the vet to see which brand he has that will do the same thing -

My wife actually enjoys the bonding with the dogs whilst she picks the ticks of by hand - she says it's very restfull!

These products will do the job easier though and they (or another brand) are available in country - think I've seen them in Tesco - Lotus recently.

well .. you have to get rid the tick both dog's body and environment

On Dog ..example

1 Fronline Spot on

2Ivermectin Injection

3dip with Amitraz solution

4shampoo

IMO i dont recommend to use antitick powder..sort of residue

environment

- dont forget to clear it also .. (include dog's bedding/cage/toy/blaket ) ..example

1 boiled water

2 pour with Amitraz solution (after u dip dog..keep that solution)

3 pyrethrin extract (pesticide) as Raid-Water base (less residue and degenerate pretty fast after expose light /O2

Ask BambinA on the forum  ...    she's a Vet

I had a massive tick invasion last month. Shampooed all dogs (that gets rid of all the big ones :o ) then when they were dry, Frontline (kills all the small ones), then preventive maintenance: ie check each dog every day and pick off any ticks you find. yuck. But, it worked really well. My dogs all sleep outside so the bedding wasn't the problem, it was the ticks in the grass etc.

Also give the dogs a clove of garlic everyday with their meal. The ticks don't like the odor that comes off the skin of the dog. Doesn't kill them but keeps them from wanting to attach themselves. This is only one of several regimes I do to keep them at bay. One single thing isn't enough. Tick shampoo, tick spray, tick collar and a shot at the vets once every 4 months seems to do the job.

Biggest issue is that the ticks are in the yard and is why they continue to come back. Can't find the yard sprays that are designed to kill the ticks in Thailand, unless Bambi knows.

Each dog gets a clove of garlic? Do you cook it up with their food or crush it raw and mix it into their food?

Crush it or dice it raw and mix in with either precooked food or canned dog food. Don't work in the pellet type food. :o

Couple of articles but human based rather then dog based. I started doing it because of articles on ticks & fleas on dogs. Don't know where they are now.

Get a matchbook and cut off the match heads. Then mix the match heads in the dog food. The sulphur in the match tip gets into the blood and the ticks hate it and will find another home.

Old army trick, that seemed to work for me in the tick infested woods of kentucky.

No side effects at all. :o

Slightly OT but..

Huge problem here in Sweden with ticks carrying Borelia and Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE) to humans. Ticks live and thrive on all the dears (Bambi) in the forests. Does this problem exist in Thailand?
