Thai team meets World Heritage Committee today

BANGKOK, 19 June 2011 (NNT)-Natural Resources and Environment Minister Mr. Suwit Khunkitti will meet UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova concerning the Preah Vihear case to reaffirm Thailand’s statement over the matter today.

As Head of the Thai World Heritage team, Mr. Suwit said that in the 35th World Heritage Committee Meeting he would question the committee whether the financial aid of 50,000 US dollars to Cambodia was reasonable. The money was said to have been spent on the areas surrounding the Hindu temple.

Thailand; however, countered that the areas in which Cambodia claimed to use the money on were indeed on Thai soil. Mr. Suwit expressed disagreement over the money allocation and feared that this could later spark issues with Thailand.

He added this meeting would mainly consist of the reviewing of the agenda and the management plan around the Preah Vihear proposed by Cambodia. The latter is expected to be further discussed next Thursday.
