Indian girl, 14, stabbed in eye when resisting attempted rape

UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- India's National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Sunday condemned the blinding of a teenage girl when she resisted two boys who tried to rape her in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Hindustan Times reported that NCPCR chairperson Shantha Sinha promised to take action and said they would send a letter to the Uttar Pradesh authorities on Monday, asking for a report on the incident.

"It is a very shocking and barbaric incident. I think there has to be an end to such violence against children, especially girls. She was blinded and that is even more terrible," Sinha told a news channel. "I have a feeling that all these issues have been occurring, but right now, it seems, they are coming out of wraps," she added.

The 14-year-old girl was attacked on Friday in Kannauj district by two boys, both high school students. They stalked her near a field and, when they tried to rape the girl, stabbed her in the eye. Her screams brought her parents to her rescue and both boys ran away.

According to a doctor, her left eye suffered around 80 percent damage and it is unlikely that she will ever be able to see normally as the cornea has been affected. One of the accused has been arrested.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old girl on Friday was also allegedly raped at gun point in the same state. Police said an investigation has been launched. Last week, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and hanged inside a police station premise in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
