A Bhum Jai Thai Party canvasser survived an assassination attempt during a political tour in Narathiwat's Waeng district, though police have yet to uncover whether the shooting was politically motivated or carried out by insurgents.

Sakareeya Hama, 38, was hit in his right arm by bullets shot by two teenage men on a motorcycle who were following his vehicle after he finished his party duties.

He said he had just returned from Malaysia, where he worked as a construction worker, and had no known enemies.

Meanwhile, the aunt of a suspect wanted in the shooting of Pheu Thai Party MP Pracha Prasobdee has called on him to surrender to police.

Jiraphong Artdej, 37, alias Tong Wang Nam Kheo, is wanted for the shooting of Pracha, according to a police indictment.

Pranee Thuenjanthuek said she feared for the safety of Jiraphong, who she said was a quiet man who was very unlikely to be involved in crime or a gunforhire racket. She called on police to "take him alive" even if he resisted arrest when found.

Police said they found that Jiraphong owned a Toyota Vigo pickup that was likely used in the shooting of Pracha on May 10. Police are looking into whether he was also behind the killing of Bhum Jai Thai canvasser Suban Jiraphanwanich in Bangkok last week.

In Udon Thani, a vehicle in Pheu Thai Party candidate Surathin Phimanmekin's motorcade caught fire. Police said the blaze likely resulted from a short circuit in a generator, though Surathin said he thought it was arson by a rival party.

The sixwheel truck was burned out completely before the fire was put out. Driver Uthai Jitong said two loud bangs were heard before the fire broke out in the generator. Surathin said such an incident should never happen in Udon Thani, the home province of the red shirts.

Police in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son have been instructed to watch out for political violence. In a videoconference yesterday, national police chief Wichean Potephosree reminded them they faced disciplinary and criminal action if they sided with or assisted campaigns of any candidate.
