An "escape-the-Songkran-visa-trip" to Singapore 10 of April- 18 of April 2011.

post-118262-0-07027900-1309032249_thumb.

Every year I try to make the finish of my Thai Tourist-visa-extension to coincide with the Songkran festival so I can escape the madness of the "water-war" ! :D

This year I decided to go back to Singapore, because cheap airplane tickets and more interesting than Penang my normal place of escape!

I bought a ticket with AirAsia from Phuket to Singapore total cost 3100 baht one way. I stayed at Hotel 81 Lucky in Lorong 20 in Geylang cost for room 59 S$., about 10 minutes walk to the Aljunied MRT train-station for easy access to all the interesting places around Singapore.

Hotel was OK small simple clean aircon room with a double bed, flatscreen TV, tiny closet for your clothes, bathroom with hot/cold water shower, also had a hair blower and water heater, no fridge though.

I booked on their website and got a free Wi/Fi Internet connection in my room. Normally you had to pay 10 S$ a day for the use of Internet.

Unfortunately I got a very bad cold during my stay in Singapore with fever and sinus inflammation that spread to the inner-ears as well! I didn't indulge in any P4P just did some normal tourist sightseeing in the day, because of my illness I didn't venture out after dark!

Lots of building construction was going on all over the "Lion City", especially around the Marina Bay area with the new Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Casino, also a lot of change on Sentosa Island including a "Universal Studios"!

I won't bother you with too much writing but let the photos do the talking! Here's a link to my Photo-Gallery:

Hope you'll enjoy my pictures! :)

Thanks for the photos Plahgat. Great.

You certainly got around a bit.

I live in Singapore and recognise most of the places in your photo's. I'm happy the weather was kind to you and sympathise about your cold.

You must have walked past the Thai Embassy on Orchard Road, its bang next door to Orchard Towers......the irony :)

I work on the tunnel construction of Singapore's quickly expanding MRT system. My team and I transported a 400ton TBM through the Circle Line's Harbourfront Station, which is under Vivo City, in 2008. Before removing it from a small shaft just to the East of Vivo City (close to the Power Station Disco).

Hence me being an " Underground Member" on this forum.

Yes, very good. I'm also resident in Singapore these days, and i think you got a good selection of photos of the city area there. If you'd come a little bit further east than Bugis, you might have found your way to Arab Street and Kampong Glam, the historic Malay quarter, and from there to Golden Mile, aka "Little Thailand"! Also, I personally prefer East Coast Park to Sentosa ... Find it to be a bit more laid back and MiniChaos likes to fish off Bedok Pier.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed your trip.

Hello Capt.C.

Long time since I've seen you post......good to hear you're still here in Singapore.

I had about 6 months in Thailand in 2009 as no job, that was great. Also great to be back, although, being on a Employment Pass the time span is linked to what work is available. I'm not that interested in taking PR staus as if there is no work, I'll not be here. Far too expensive.

Will be here for about another 1.5 years, hopefully.

Will be down at Golden Mile today :)

Cheers.

Just to add.

Its nice to have our youngest daugther in school here ( Modern Montessori ). Our eldest daughter is living in Thailand as the cost of the private, international, special school she was at comes in at over 2K SG$ a month. Plus she was only seeing school-apartment-school-apartment.

Back home she can chase chickens and ride on motorbikes........

Hello mate, still here and I am a PR now ... As I'm in the finance field, in truth I can't see me returning to Thailand full time until I'm ready to start spending my life savings not add to them! In the end we put my stepson in a local primary school. Same logic, we're going to be here for the long term, so he needs to know how to live like the Singaporeans he'll one day be working alongside (not to mention doing NS).

Golden Mile ... Can't make it today but we only live around the corner. PM me and let's arrange to meet for food and (relatively) cheap beers?

thanks for sharing the pics - Singapore has such a spectacular skyline, we were there Feb 2010 and the Marina Sands building was not yet complete, since then we're heard from a friend who stayed there, but was too scared to use the swimming pool on the top level.

cheers!

Cheers Captain C.

I wouldn't worry about the national service here, as you know it has far more serious implications in Thailand (if the boy loses the "national service lottery"). Its mainly Macdonalds and mobile phones ain't it.

I'ld like to meet up at Golden Mile for a chat. I work all hours due to the nature of the job (construction) so Sunday is the only time I get out, always with my wife and daughter (3). :) We live in Bishan ,at the moment.

I always bump into Thai guys at Golden Mile that I've worked with here over the last 10 years. Good to see them and takes me back to some of the crazy situations that can happen whilst working in tunnels construction.

Cheers, can meet up when you're free.

Great pics!

Back to the 90's, when living in Bali, Singapore was my visa run destination...

Except Darwin, there was not too many options actually... and I used to hate it!

But today, you gave me the envy to go back and have a look around...
