Hi I would like to know if I can rely on getting an evening flight (7 or 7.15pm) from Don Muang to Chiangmai without pre-booking. In other words, is it safe to just turn up at DM and buy my ticket at the last minute? thanks

That's the last flight of the day so if sold out you'd be stuck.

I imagine loads vary by day of week.

I looked at the loads for the next ~ 7 days and space remains. I'd say your odds would be 90% getting a seat except perhaps on a Fri, or Sun? Just my SWAG.

How soon in the day do you know you will want to fly that day? I might try to make a booking via a mobile connection to see if they have tickets and if so, then go to DMK. Not sure how far in advance they close out the res. system

Do you have a travel agent? If so, give them a heads up on your plans, then maybe ring them before heading to DMK to have them make a booking, then pay for it at the counter?

You can telephone them and make a booking then collect tickets at the airport....i had done that before but don't latest procedures..

as i now travel on AirAsia via swampy airport...

My problem is though I can fly a plane I've suffered from severe panic attacks and have not flown for 7 years.

It has taken all that time just to feel half way decent enough to get onto public transport like trains, it's still something of a horrorshow.

I intend to try it and DMK to CNX would be the icebreaker.

I shall go to DMK. have a couple of small beers, and if I feel up to it buy my ticket and go.

50/50 I guess.

:o

Thanx for the help

I think it'll be Wednesday evening Nok flight.

Sorry to hear of your ailment.

DM is an old airport but the Nok Air waiting area is very large, very relaxed environment there. Nok Air is a good airline, in my experience.

CM has a nice airport, no rush their either. CM is a nice city with lots to see. Very low key when the GF and I visited there.

Get yourself a copy of 'Self Help for your nerves' by Dr Claire Weekes and just keep reading and re-reading it until it sinks in.

Thanks everyone for the help.

The times seem to work out very well.

I can go to the airport by train arrive about 1700, see if I can manage the plane, and if things don't work out maybe get a place on the next train through to CM passing DM at 2023.

I've asked elsewhere if I have to go by taxi between DM train station and the airport entrance.

I may as well ask again here.

Thanks again!

If you can't get it in Thailand let me know and I'll send you a copy from the UK. It saved my life. It may very well save yours - or make it back into a life worth living. I'm serious. Let me know.

Very kind i'll have a look.

Actually I'm pretty up on cognitive behaviour therapy.

A meeting in England between a gang of us who were very close is happening as one of them is getting a book published,

Three of them I literally haven't seen since the 70s. It's on Aug 9th. I almost certainly can't go as though I've been making good steady unmedicated progress if i overdo it I could set myself back.....so I'll be there on Skype. However it's really concentrated my mind, and one of the things I've done is although he can't tell me anything new, see a hospital shrink to get a letter of record in case I ever need it, and have a consultation. He said I was doing just about right.

I've gone from being stuck in a tiny area to going to CR and BKK and so on, been on the skytrain and underground several times, cycle out even on highways now, and feeling better about it alll the time.

However, as Graham Parker says in the song

"There's nothing to hold on to

When gravity betrays you"

and sometimes I literally stand in fearful wonder that things don't all "fall off" the world.

This is simply going to take time to rewire and if I expect perfection now.....well I need rewiring and it takes time two steps forward one step back.

Where you're quite right is it's actually a good idea to get into these books when a challenge comes up, and this is a real challenge. Just getting around in BKK first time alone may be more than enough and i mean more than. Still, I have a plan, I'm going tonight Monday by train. if i can i may play out the trip to DM Tuesday evening and if all is well try the real thing next day.

Just the public transport fills me with trepidation but i have to keep pushing intelligently eve though it's very easy to be lazy with these phobias.

Again thanks for the kind offer here's something in return play loud:

No problem. As I said if you want me to send you a copy just let me know. It was first published in the 60s (I think) so the language and some of the assumptions about what treatment is available are out of date but the advice is spot on. Go and stick 'self help for your nerves' into amazon.co.uk and have a look at the customer reviews. Take care.

Cheeryble – you’re going to be fine – the fact that you have the balls to try this after 7 years grounded means you’re now half way to achieving it.....I admire you for even considering it.

Years ago, I used to have serious panic attacks even in an air-conditioned car if it got flanked by lines of traffic in a jam or at a red light. Growing older helps...

You could also speak the the airline customer service centre and tell them of your phobia – it’s common, and you’re certainly not alone. You’ll probably find they’re sympathetic, and sharing it with them might help you a lot.

If I remember correctly there is a bridge connection across the highway to DM from the Amari Airport Hotel reception, so if nothing has changed you could easily walk across to the airport from there.

Whatever, I salute you, and wish you all the best.

Very kind of you too JKO.

I could not respond as the useless iPad toy is not even up to posting on Thaivisa. (unless you want an expensive reader don't buy one!)

Anyway I have news about the trip.

Perhaps I shall send it to a couple of you privately as it may bore the general posting population....but first a good night's sleep.

cheers Cheeryble

Thankyou all for your words of encouragement.

The fact is the evening before last despite many mishaps a perfect storm happened in my favour and I determined to go on the plane if it dam_n killed me. ) I've sent the story to a couple of posters.)

It was two days of murder, but I did go to CM by plane.

Feels great.....B)
