Abhisit urges EC to reinstate voting right of voters who fail to change status

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva Monday called on the Election Commission to reinstate the voting right of voters who have not changed their voting status from advance voting.

Abhisit said many people have registered to vote in advance in the last election and did not know that they would also have vote in advance this time on Sunday for failing to inform the EC beforehand they wanted to vote on the election day.

Abhisit said many of such voters have just been informed that they would not be allowed to vote on July 3 so the EC should come up with a measure to help them.

Re-enactment Plan of Local Politician's Killing

Investigators held re-enactment yesterday of the assassination of a local Lopburi politician after one of the suspects was arrested.

Meanwhile, another suspect in the crime has reported to the police.

Trakul Thongthip, another suspect in the assassination of the Chairman for Lopburi Provincial Administration Organization Suban Jirapanwanich, turned himself in to police yesterday after the arrest of his associate Ekcahi Pompadej.

Trakul testified that he was contracted by Wanchai Phopiti to work as the lookout for the killer team. He said he was paid 4,000 baht.

Wanchai is also a suspect in the shooting of Pheu Thai Party's former MP for Samutprakarn, Pracha Prasobdee, and he is now being held by investigators.

Meanwhile, investigators at Chanasongklam police station escorted Ekachai to a sidewalk in Saphankwai District yesterday where he received the remainder of his payment from Sirapong Artdej who is believed to be the gunman.

Investigators then conducted a re-enactment of the crime at several points including a bus top in Pin Klao District where the murder team met the employer, and at a department store where Eakchai and his two of associates, Siripong and Wanchai Pothipiti, identified the victim for the attack.

Ekachai was also brought to Trok Sakey near Ratchdamneon Avenue where he picked up the gunman with his motorcycle after the murder and sent him to Victory Monument where the latter fled in a taxi.

Ekchai testified that two of his three associates, Wanchai and Trakul took the job of identifying Suban while Siripong acted as the gunman.

Investigators said Ekachai was paid 40,000 baht for his job. The first 20,000 baht was paid in advance and the latter 20,000 baht came after the murder.

Unemployment Rate at 0.8% in April

Thailand's unemployment rate has fallen by 166,000 since last year and stands at 0.8 percent, according to the National Statistics Office.

National Statistics Office Director-General Viboondhat Sudhantanakit says unemployment claims decreased in April year on year from 451,000 to 285,000, with the unemployment rate now standing at 0.8 percent.

He added that among the unemployed, some 86,000 are fresh graduates or people who have never had a job.

The service and commerce sector has the highest number of unemployment claims at 88,000 people, followed by the manufacturing sector at 69,000 and the agricultural sector at 42,000.

Analyzed by level of education, Viboondhat said 79,000 of the unemployed have college degrees, while 52,000 completed only high school.

66,000 of those without jobs finished junior high school and 49,000 elementary school.

39,000 have no education or less than elementary education.

Despite a year-on-year decline, the NSO head noted that April unemployment claims were 9,000 higher than the number in March.
