Mut Nam

Hello. I speak some thai but am a little confused by a phrase. I kept overhearing kids at the local swimming pool saying something like "Mut nam" - i'm guessing it means something like diving or holding your breath underwater. But I thought diving was "dum nam" and it seems a very short phrase for "holding your breath underwater". Anyway, sorry for the roman letters - i can read thai a little but my spelling is rubbish. Can anyone throw any light on this for me?

Cheers!!!

J

dum naam "ดำน้ำ" = diving under water

mut naam "มุดน้ำ" = ducking under water ( and cover less distance than diving)

However sometimes "some thais" will use them interchangably, or use both with the same meaning as "diving"

how about มุดหอย ? :-)

This might work in some circles; but มุด just means to put your head into an opening or space, or under a thing which has a surface as in มุดน้ำ. Have you heard this used as slang or did you make it up yourself?
