Must be the slowest time of the year on Thaivisa if this thread is considered at "Hot" topic.

BTW: To give credit where credit is due, Foodmart now has an excellent bread and pastry section with most if not all of the towns top bakeries represented. Also has a great "all natural" yogurt that is hard to find elsewhere.

Hot topic... he he!! I haven't been back since I posted this thread - Rude service, and plain lazy and non-motivated employees are a big turn off - apparently the Australian Mgr doesn't really care!!

Funny. I started shopping there more recently. Only a very limited range of items that are convenient and also priced OK. I do know the price competition so I know when the prices are silly and I won't bite on those. I haven't experienced rude service lately. In fact, the cashiers have actually been mildly friendly, and no, I wouldn't think of "tipping" at a grocery store. The one time I dealt with the meat guy he couldn't have been nicer, though he misunderstood my Thai request for "eight" of an item to mean eggs.blink.png

When it comes to Cats no one sits on the fence. They hate them or like them. It seems to be the same thing with Foodmart in Jomtien.

Been shopping there for over 6 years and never ever encountered one bit of rudeness from the staff. I don't exactly do all my shopping there. If I am short of a few things and passing I go in and get what I need.

They have an excellent selection of fruit juices and at a good price.

All imported foods be it inTesco Big C or any where else is going to at a premium.

Any ex-pat living in the LOS who has got to the point of counting every satang or Baht for their food needs to take a long hard look at why he is there and whether he could be better off elsewhere. Inflation is starting to spiral and kick in and its hurting the locals so it will for sure start to bite us all whether you shop in Tesco or Foodmart.

By the way I like cats....and find Taco shells dry and tasteless....

Nope. I don't love or hate Foodmart. I used to hate it, now I feel it is what it is and I can use some of it for what it is. Cats -- HATE! (Also allergic.)

Shoot the staff is the only thing that keeps me coming back, lovely young things, have had my eye on a couple of them for a while. It's the outrageous prices of they're meat and produce that is off putting. I cook everyday and shop mostly at Makro. Try doing a price comparison of the two, you won't believe how much more expensive Foodmart is.

I believe you. I don't have access to Makro so not an issue.

The bakery items are so-so and expensive. Some of the yougurt health food stuff is intriguing but it always seems

to me that the selection is quirky - as if they don't really understand their market.

They used to have Armstrong cheese but now it's been replaced with more

processed stuff.

Yet they have Kieffer. A real smörgåsbord Foodmart is - but the selection is ultimately too limited.

Yes, Foodland has the better selection but unfortunately is too far from Jomtien without wheels.

I usually prefer to take the bahtbus up to Tesco Sukumvit for 10B rather than use Foodmart but on the very rare occasions that I have been in there I have found the selection of items to be quite varied for such a small store, with a decent choice of brands for each type of product which is something you dont often get in Thailand. Apart from the odd bargain it certainly isnt cheap though.

I'm also neutral on Foodmart. Living in the Pratumnak Hill area I find it's a great late night store to get the odd items you can't find in 7Elevens.

You can find some good bargains in there. If not bargains, items priced pretty close to the other supermarkets.

A full sized Friendship in Jomtien would be perfection.

A full sized Foodland even better. It'll probably happen one day.

I'll take either one. Or both.

So shop there, but I can assure you if Friendship or Foodland built a market close by, Foodmart would instantly lose over 90 percent of their business.

BTW, I don't find 7-11 a rip off, though I do consider Foodland one. Foodland present themselves as a supermarket and 7-11 is obviously a convenience store.

I do and there are products that are actually cheaper than in friendship, but if i was worried about a few baht on Farang food, i would be buying 20 baht noodles on the side of the road instead of a steak from the US or Lamb chops from Australia.

The staff always seem very happy and helpful to me, the Thai manager is very knowledgeable and they have a great wine selection.

Parking is free at Foodmart too, unlike friendship who even charge you to do a uturn through their carpark.

Foodland seem to not have a lot of the outside brands as they manufacture so many things themselves with processed goods, they do have some items i cant get anywhere else.

NO, parking is free at Friendship, you just have to buy something and get a stamp on your parking check. The U-turn fee is to discourage the Baht buses from using the Friendship parking lot when the right turn out of Soi Bua Khao is blocked by the police

The high prices at Foodmart would not stop me from shopping there if it was convenient, but there were several instances of a lack of respect that finally persuaded me to blacklist the place.

One day last year I parked outside Foodmart and went in to buy some things. I parked beside an empty space but when I came out there was an old banger parked close enough to my car to make it difficult to open the drivers door. Now there's a scowling git who loiters around the front door of Foodmart as a 'security guard'. Anyone who uses Foodmart will know the individual I mean. Anyway, as soon as I went to the car, scowler and his mate, banger owner, came rushing over screeching that I had damaged this valuable piece of automotive heritage and would have to pay them 10,000 baht for damages. This is an on-shore version of the great Pattaya jet ski scam.Fortunately I have a way with words and scowling-git soon saw the error of his ways.

I've heard that the manager of this shop is Australian, but if so he's never there. Try asking for the manager and you'll get "Cannot, no hab, him come tomorrow". Hands off management at best, and no respect for customers. You can't imagine this kind of incident happening at the Friendship car park.

I live very close to foodmart, so the shop is very convenient for me, I don't even have to use the u-turn now that the sidewalks are paved.

They got everything one could need urgently, and I really don't feel like spending an hour more to go to Tesco, Big C or Friendship just to save 100 baht on my basket.

I tried to find a fax number or email of the store, but wasn't successful.

If a manger reads this, here are some suggestions of what could be added to their products:

- European style mayo. Either Thomy, Kraft, Kühne, Lesieur, Amora, etc. Foodland carries Thomy but the price is prohibitive, wondering why they don't switch to a cheaper brand (Thomy is expensive everywhere, not just in Thailand)

- German style mustard. Either Thomy or Kraft, Kühne, etc.

- Salt&Vinegar or Balsamico flavored chips by Lorenz (they got other Lorenz flavors, I think this one would sell nicely as well)

- KitKat: I recently noticed that shops now only carry "international recipe" which tastes not as good as the regular (European) one. I guess the international contains less cocoa. Where have the good KitKat bars gone?

Don't waste your time trying to find a manager at Foodmart. All you'll get is 'mai mee' and 'no have'. Just one reason I now spend my money elsewhere.

Managers are not the reason I visit shops.

Location, presence of products I want and price are my criteria.

And if you have reason to complain about either the goods or service where do you go? A good manager sets the standard in a shop. No manager, no service.

I see no point in complaining about any of the very cheap items I could buy in Foodmart - it's not like they sell electronics or fridges. The worst that could happen is that's there is a rotten egg in the bunch or past date meat or whatever.

I don't get a head over 100 baht.

Interesting to hear different opinions about Foodlands and the other ones mentioned, because I hardly never go there. Stay rather close to Friendship South Pattaya. I'm too lazy to check out the other ones.:)

Foodmart is there for the convenience of the locals around it. No compelling reason for anyone else to visit. It's not as bad as I used to think it was. For SOME staple items the prices are normal and competitive to other markets. For others, it is ridiculous. You have to shop around a while to know which is which. Also, I have yet to have a rotten meat issue at Foodmart which I have a number of times at other locally famous markets which I won't mention but you can guess. Edited by Jingthing

I go to foodmart mostly for the alcohol, its the closest thing I have in Bang Saray I think to a place that sells a wide variety of farang wines, beers and spirits. Glad to see Budwieser now selling around most stores now..

If I have the time I go to friendship and if I really have a lot of time on my hands I will go to villa or tops in central.

As for the taco shells in the first post, they are not on the shelves in the main asiles they are at the end of asiles, not that anyone cares a year on.............

Very handy for me just for things like some cheeses, herbs, lemons, farang sauces etc. It is overpriced but we are only talking a few baht here or there nothing that would really make a difference to my life + its close to Eataly to stock up on lovely parma ham and salami milano.

amen to that.

Many items aren't overpriced, for example eggs, milk, toast bread, minced meat, noodles, etc.

The store is just so convenient for me, I live less than 2 minutes away by bike and it's open 24h.

As posted above, I have ideas for improving their product selection, but I won't get a headache if I find nobody for listening to my caprices.

next...
