Final Stage of PAD's 'Vote No' Campaign

With 'Election Day' drawing near, the People's Alliance for Democracy is stepping up its 'Vote No' campaign in the final stage of campaigning.

The People's Alliance for Democracy key supporter, Vice Admiral Prateep Chuenarrom, said the 'Vote No' campaign received a warm welcome from people during its walk rally to hand out “Vote No” stickers and leaflets with the slogan, “Don't let animals into Parliament.” along Tha Phra junction, Petch Kasem Road, and Buddhamonthon Road.

Prateep also motivated voters to tick the 'no vote' box on their ballots on 'Election Day'.

He said that if the election result shows that a large number of people voted no, it will be apparent that there is a significant call for reform.

He insists that people call for political reform, as there are no qualified politicians who can solve the problems besetting the country.

Meanwhile, the PAD is planning to end its rally on July 1.

Today it will continue its “Vote No” campaign by organizing a parade along Suwintawong and Silom roads tomorrow.

PAD Slams Democrat Party's Planned Rally at Royal Plaza

The People's Alliance for Democracy spokesman calls the Democrat Party's planned campaign rally at the Royal Plaza on Friday inappropriate, saying there is no reason for the party to hold the event so close to the group's protest site, and it could allow a third-party to instigate chaos.

Spokesman for the People's Alliance for Democracy or PAD, Panthep Phuaphongphan criticized the Democrat Party's planned major campaign rally at the Royal Plaza on Friday, saying the party should not organize the event near the group's protest site at Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge.

Panthep said as the PAD is set to end its rally on Friday, the area will be crowded with a large number of supporters.

He added that it is inappropriate for the Democrat Party to conduct its campaign rally near the PAD's protest site.

The PAD spokesman said the Democrat Party and the government must be held responsible if any incidents occur, because his group has been there all along and has never expanded its activities to other areas.

Residents warned of rising water level in Mekong River

image_20110630113940DED861DF-03A1-751E-8E70349E81E4BD32.jpg

BANGKOK, June 30 -- Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has warned riverside residents along the Mekong River of possible flooding as the river's water level continues to increase, which could eventually overflow to bring floods to many provinces.

The agency said the Mekong's water level reached nine metres, one metre higher than Wednesday's level.

The critical level is 11 metres, which if the water level reaches that point, the water from branches of the Mekong River and nearby Nong Han Lake could overflow to inundate a number of provinces.

Nong Han is a lake in Thailand's northeast, located northeast of Sakhon Nakhon town.

Meanwhile, in the eastern province of Chanthaburi, persistent downpours has caused the water level in the Chanthaburi River to increase. The province has changed its customary warning flags from green to yellow to alert residents to be prepared and keep close watch on the water level.

The province also issued warning to outlying villagers to be prepared in case of flooding.

The Meteorological Department, in its daily forecast, said scattered thundershowers were expected countrywide with isolated heavy rain in the east and the southwest coast. Moderate winds and waves two metres high were expected in the Andaman Sea. Shipping was warned to proceed with caution. (MCOT online news)

Former Justice Minister Denies Wooeing Defense Minister for Thaksin

A former justice minister with ties to Thaksin denies having gotten in touch with defense minister to woo him to join the Pheu Thai Party in setting up the new government.

Former Justice Minister Wattana Muabgsuk insisted he has not visited Brunei to negotiate with interim Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan.

There have been recent rumors coming out suggesting that Wattana, as deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinnawatra's representative, held a secret talk with Prawit in Brunei to offer the defense minister a job if the Pheu Thai Party is elected, under the condition that the army refrain from intervening in politics.

Wattana admitted that that he used to go to Brunei to visit the ousted former PM as his benefactor and former co-worker.

He reiterated that he is not responsible for negotiation with other parties to form the next government.

In addition, he speculated that the Pheu Thai Party would win at least 250 MP seats, and said it could even reach 300 in the upcoming election this Sunday.

Meanwhile, he strongly believes the army will not stage a coup if the Pheu Thai Party wins the General Election as the army must accept and respect the will of the people as expressed at the ballot box.

Commerce Ministry Aims to Control Fast Food Prices

The Commerce Ministry is prepared to resort to legal means to curb high fast food prices.

Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade Watcharee Wimuktayon has announced that the department is planning to set the price standard for all popular Thai fast food dishes such as chicken fat rice, barbecued pork rice, stir-fried basil, Thai omelet, and various curries.

Initially, the standard prices for these dishes will fall between 25 to 30 baht.

While asking for their cooperation, the department is also planning to increase the number of the low-priced blue flag restaurants from around 4,200 to 10,000 this year.

Watcharee claims the new price standard is aimed to bring fairness to consumers who have been complaining that sellers have been taking advantage of them by not lowering prices despite the cheaper ingredients costs.

From its observation, the department asserts that low- and middle-income consumers have changed their eating behavior; from cooking at home to buying ready-made foods.

As a result, the price of fast food dishes has inflated by about 15 percent.

Meanwhile, the government has been trying to control ingredients prices such as pork and chicken meat.

Therefore, the department believes the sellers need to lower their prices accordingly.

In the beginning, the department is planning to enforce the new price standard on blue flag restaurants.

At any rate, the government believes the sellers will comply with the new measure, but it is prepared to resort to legal means to control prices if necessary.

Chuvit against populist policies

BANGKOK, 30 June 2011 (NNT) – Rak Thailand Party Leader Chuvit Kamolvisit has expressed his opposition against populist policies launched by other parties because a high amount of budget will be needed while no political parties have explained where to find the source of money.

Mr Chuvit stated that populist policies are unrealistic due to the required excessive budget which is in contrast to the money left in the national reserves. He noted that the next government might lack budget for necessary development and investment if it spent too much on populist policies.

The outspoken MP candidate then cited budget figures for populist policies of some political parties, including 960 billion baht of Pheu Thai, 420 billion baht of Democrat, 1.12 trillion baht of Chart Pattana Puea Pandin, 770 billion baht of Bhumjaithai and 230 billion baht of Chart Thai Pattana.

Mr Chuvit, also a former massage parlour tycoon, added that any political party wanting to proceed with their populist policies must bring in more money to the state; however, no political party so far has been explaining how it could do so.

The Rak Thailand leader also predicted that the Pheu Thai Party should become the opposition after the election if it could not gain more than 350 seats in the House while the Bhumjaithai Party should get around 60 seats. And if his prediction was right, he said, there would be a chaos in the country within the next three months.

Pheu Thai Denies Secret Meeting with Military

While campaigning with her family in Min Buri District of Bangkok, Pheu Thai Party's prime ministerial candidate Yingluck Shinawatra denied a secret meeting between a party member and the defense minister.

Yingluck Shinawatra, the Pheu Thai Party's Number One party-list MP candidate, accompanied by her family, has traveled to Min Buri District of Bangkok to help Wicharn Meechai-anant, a Pheu Thai candidate, campaign for the upcoming poll.

Yingluck denied a news report that Wattana Muangsuk, who is a Pheu Thai Party senior member has secretly met with Defense Minister general Prawit Wongsuwan in Brunai on behalf of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

It has been speculated that the Pheu Thai Party may seek the military's approval in forming the government in exchange for a pledge that it will not persecute the armed force leaders for the political riot crackdown last year and stop supporting the red-shirt anti-monarchy movement.

Yingluck said that the report was simply an unfounded rumor aiming to tarnish the party's image and that she will not negotiate with the military.

The Pheu Thai top candidate also expressed confidence that her party will be given the opportunity by Bangkok voters.

She also discounted another rumor that army chief General Prayut Chan-ocha has pulled out a gun on a canvasser of the Chart Thai Pattana Party in Ang Thong Province.

At any rate, Yingluck said that she has ordered all of the party's candidates to conduct their campaign peacefully.
