Clear policies secure PT victory: Thaksin

By The Nation

Former Pheu Thai Party leader Thaksin Shinawatra attributed the party's winning to the policies designed to boost the economy and for national reconciliation.

In an interview with several Thai television, Thaksin ousted in 2006 and now in exile in Dubai said that voters showed supports to the economic policies. "They believe that the policies can be implemented."

Thailand's election 2011 is top news of several web sites like Economist and BBC. BBC radio updated all listeners of the election today. Exit polls showed that PT witnessed a landside victory.

Reconciliation has been what all Thai businessmen expect from this election, after the five turbulent years that culimated in the bloody protest last year and further divided the country.

Democrat Party is leading Pheu Thai Party when policies in five areas are in the picture, according to an online reader survey by daily newspaper Krungthep Turakij conducted during May 25 and June 9. It covered the policies on economy, quality of life, mega projects, public health and environment.

The poll shows that "approval" votes for Democrats are outpacing "disapproval" votes. Meanwhile, the online respondents gave more "disapproval" votes to Pheu Thai's policies than "approval" votes.

On economy, Democrats propose the 25 per cent increase in minimum wage within 2 years, debt restructuring for 1 million individuals, an increase in village fund by Bt1 million for 80,000 villages.

Phue Thai proposes the increase in minimum wage nationwide to Bt300 and the guarantee of Bt15,000 salary for all graduates, a decrease in corporate income tax rate from 30 per cent to 23 per cent, the creation of 100,000 jobs, and the focus on mega projects for enhanced competitiveness.

On quality of life, Democrats propose the relocation of Khlong Toey Port and construction of Chao Phya Park, the improvement in the mass transit modes, and the campaign through Government Housing Bank to lend zero-rate loans worth Bt25 billion to first-home buyers.

Pheu Thai proposes the extension of electric train service to cover 400km with Bt20 flat fare, the change in the Bangkok city plan to alleviate flood problems, the construction of accommodation along electric train routes for fresh graduates, and income-generating campaigns to boost public spending power.

On mega projects, Democrats will invest tens of billion per annum to improve tourist attractions in 60 provinces, turn Laem Chabang into a harbour city, turn Map Ta Phut into an Eco Town, invest Bt380 billion to link high-speed train from North to South, and extend high-speed train to link Bangkok to Rayong and eventually Trat.

Pheu Thai will build Bangkok's twin city to cope with Asean integration, reclaim land by 10km and build dam around Bangkok to prevent floods, develop the Southern Seaboard to accommodate growth, and improve the irrigation system in 25 areas.

On public health, Democrats will upgrade tambon health offices to hospitals, create a big hospital for a group of provinces, allow hospitals to earn revenue on top of annual budgets,

Pheu Thai will issue a single health card, reintroduce the Bt30 medical card, revamp pay system for health officers, provide more equipment to health offices and hospitals, primary care for children, and create jobs for the elderly to reduce fiscal burden on the elderly's health care services.

On environment, Democrats will double alternative energy consumption, resort to local wisdom in solving land erosion along the coastal areas, adopt tax incentives to promote environmentally-clean industries, encourage the private sector to reduce energy consumption, and encourage local administration bodies to take part in solving environmental issues.

Pheu Thai will launch the low-carbon policy particularly in the transport sector, separate the industrial and residential areas in Map Ta Phut, maintain forested areas, build an efficient waste incinerator in Bangkok, force all housing estates to have waste water treated before discharge, and increase transport by rail to promote low-carbon society.

In a word, Isaan delivered 100 seats to Taksin Inc., and 4 to Abhisit. The 126 seats up for grabs in Isaan dwarf those of any other region.

Trying to claw that back is hard work even with Abhisit sweeping the south 50-0.

Politically, it is now clear that what Isaan decides, Thailand does.

Looks like reader survay was all made up and it's a little too late for an election campaing, they had 2.5 years to convince people they are able to do anything, than just empty promises

Good point. If you want to win an election, do something for the people of Isaan, or forget winning!

Former Pheu Thai Party leader Thaksin Shinawatra

No he isn't.....

He can't even tell the truth in his press statements...

Why don't you try to understand the difference between comment and press statement then read it again...

No need to.

It is pretty clear what will happen here now victory is assured, even to the meanest intelligence.

His people will now manipulate his image and involvement with PT in the press, now victory is theirs.

Former leader my arse...

Some people may be wondering how Thaksin is going to deliver on his clear populist policies, such as devaluing the Baht to 40 USD.

Shouldn't be too hard. I'm sure the new Thaksin puppet regime would be able to persuade the BOT to perform regular quantitative easing, where he keeps half of cash for himself and his cronies, and then give the other half away to the poor. This would redistribute wealth whilst the rich would be content as they could keep the bulk of their liquid assets in their appreciating non-Thai denominated currencies, e.g. during the crash of 1997.

Then why not just forget about having any social policies all together, and simply have a daily evening TV slot (-to compete with the current regular one) showing Thaksin traveling around Thailand, throwing huge amounts of large denominated baht notes, bearing Thaksin's head, into cheering crowds of red T-shirt clad supporters. To keep the other power bases happy, pass a law that states that only the army is permitted to distribute drugs into and out of Thailand in cooperation with the police, who have the exclusive right to sell drugs within Thailand's borders.

Along with the added spending power, to keep the foreigners happy, simply introduce an "Support A Thai family" visa for foreigners where if you can provide evidence of giving away 15,000 baht per month to a Thai family, no relationship required, then you automatically get a no questions rolling monthly visa with no requirement to leave the country. Advanced payment for long term visa welcomed.

Thaksin's Thailand would overnight be known as the world's social, political and economic reform hub.

I find it extremely amusing that the Democrats have failed to understand over the past years the importance of Isaan to their success. They didn't do anything for Isaan and therefor they've lost the election.

In the end, the Thai people have made a choice....their choice. If the margin is as big as they are saying, then they have real people power behind them. It is clear that all sides now need to work together, working for a better, safer and fairer Thai society.

I cant really comment about all the "pie in the sky" projects and promises, but my first action would be to close down all Military and "Party" TV Stations and close 4 or 5 of the Military bases around Bangkok and get the troops out into the regions where they can help protecty, support and aid local communities and once again, gain a respected status amongst the Thai people as an honorable profession and service.

I thought Thaksin was banned from politics in Thailand.

You haven't been reading the papers recently have you...

The first thing Little Sister will do is clear all Big Brother's sins...

Of course i understand that. The point i was trying to make is that if Thaksin is banned from involvement in Thai politics, why was he allowed to dictate policy, campaign openly via video links etc, during the past year or so. Either this has been legal or it hasn't. If it hasn't been legal why have their been no sanctions against Pheu Thai party. Surely if he is banned this shows utter contempt for the rule of law by his party.

I would do the reverse==send the entire police force to the barracks and deploy the army to the local police stations, this reversal would work wonders. In 6 months you would have cat-walk style police manning the perimeters - but defending the nation--no--they would be collecting revenue from the invaders :lol:

So basically you'd take control of the media, remove all trace of your opponents just like a good dictator should...

Well I'm sure that if you asked a PT member, they would tell you that Thaksin had no part in policy issues etc...

The key issue is that now they will begin to re-write history (as can be seen already) with all this crap about a "self imposed exile" and Thaksin being a "former leader" of the ruling party.

Over the next few weeks Thaksin will be painted as a martyr all over the media and the path will be paved for his "glorious" return.

The media in Thailand will comply as they are not daft enough to oppose the power brokers especially with the record of the Shinwatra family and the media.

One solution is to take up a collection to help these unhappy people to leave. It would be a large charitable undertaking. I don't want these people to be in so much emotional pain.

Everyone here who says all Issan people are un-educated please pack all your belongings and proceed to Swanphumi Airport Imediatly. hahahahah

If Issan makes up most of the population then Abhisit should have given them something a long time ago to get their otes but he did not. Those who do not feed the cat will most likely get scratched when they try and get close

CONGRATULATIONS YINGLUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I think they do,

but they were no match from the10 years of entrenched Thaksin political machine.

When your message is stifled 24/7/365 it's hard to win.

Free education. Free healthcare. Pension.

But, what Abhisit didn't do was hand out cash and give easy loans that didn't get paid back.
