Friend Of Mine Does Not Stop For Police, Just Keeps Driving

Ok,

I was in the car with my friend last night, he wasnt wearing a seatbelt and the police waved him over on Sukhumvit road. As the traffic wasnt bad he said "F that, I gave them 300 baht yesterday" and then just continues to drive off.

He has done this a few times while I have been with him and says he only stops if there is too much traffic and he has no choice and been doing it for years and they NEVER chase him. Do you think if they chase him he will be in big trouble? surely they must start to recognize his car soon or does a lot of people do it?

The first time he did it I was giggling like a little school girl when he did it, now I am thinking he might get into trouble if he keeps doing it. Anyone else do it???

What was the driver doing? I'm sure he wasn't watching the road!

As to the OP - I remember a few years back a farang was shot for not pulling over - the cop was exonerated as the guy failed to stop so is "resisting arrest"! Hope he has bullet proof windows!

Not stopping for the police check point did K.Somchai no favours in Soi Khao Noi a week or 2 back after they gave chase and shot out his tyres, he did not look at all happy handcuffed in the back of the popo pick-up.

You would not want to run a police check point up my neck of the woods [land border with Lao] The BIB set up and a 100 meters down the road is a pill box with 2 border patrol soldiers. If you run you are very likely to be hearing a lot of automatic weapons fire. Better to stop I think. Jim

My mate doesnt run police checkpoints (that I know of), just the single motorbikes that are on the side of the road collecting money.

Like my mate says, they wont chase, because their next payment from the next car is more important.

My Thai BIL drives like a madman, one day going thru Chai Nat we got waved over by 2 BIB. He slowed down and threw a 100bt note out the window.

He said they needed money for lunch and on we went.

Hmmppfffrrr.... B)

Sounds like the urban legend we heard about in Moscow...

That is what many Thais do, if they see a police man standing alone waiving them over. Don't do it when they are in a group, than it is probably an official check-point for something or the other. But otherwise chances are the officer is collecting some extra money on his own and won't chase you down.

If they do, just stop and claim you didn't see him.

Depends where you are I suppose, where my wife lives they'd probably just smile, then turn up at my house later!

If it was a bit further south, on the main road to Chiang Rai there's a permanent check point, Police and Army (the Police do all the checking and waving people over, Army are in the background) I wouldn't advise running through that one!

Please obey traffic rules it makes it safer for others.

:D :D :D :D :D

The BIB does not only stop you if you make a mistake. They often just want money. Especially if your on a motorbike.

Tell them you do not speak Thai or English and greet them in Dutch, you will be on your way again in seconds

Actually my friend was stopped on his motorcycle, when he was getting his license out the officer thought he saw a British embassy card and goes to him "You work at British Embassy?" My friend goes "hmmmm yeah I work at the British embassy". The police apologised to him and let him go.<deleted> is with that?

That is the 'working for the government' factor.

You work for government, you can do whatever the hell you like, if I stop you and find out you've done something wrong, it's embarrassing. Sorry, I didn't know, please don't be angry with me!

Russian is probably better - there is a real fear of Russian's here I heard - mostly due to watching too many Mafia movies I guess. Put ona Russian accent and say "Da" and "Dasvidania" a lot - or if you are sure he doesn't speak Rusky (which is very unlikely) then try "yob t'voyu mat"

Right, that's what I do.

This isn't nearly as big a deal as it would be in the West.

Once I had to swerve and took out some of their traffic cones; I never knew traffic cones can launch sideways like that. ;) Either way, no issues.

Should have swerved the other way - taffic cones have a value to society.

My 72 year old German neighbor is very proper and law-abiding and driving back to Trat when a lone cop waved him over. In obedience, without a second thought, he jerked the wheel to the left and bashed into the cop's motorbike. It knocked it over and it tumbled down the embankment and disappeared.

This very proper and law-abiding man then felt it was best to put the petal to the metal and haul butt. He was still shaking when he got home two hours later. Got very drunk that night and did not drive anywhere for two months.

In BKK I once saw a Thai family in a car fail to stop for a policeman at a notorious junction where the police wait to pull you over for tea money.

The cop looked quite annoyed at being ignored, got on his bike and chased after them.

So follow the rules and you wont worry about getting stopped. Crazy idea huh?

Nah, the highly trained LE official probably never thought to look at the license plate. Wish I had a video, I'd blur the plate and you-tube it!

It happened in Chonburi and my neighbor has sworn never to leave Trat again in his car. When he goes to BKK now, he takes the bus.
