How Do You Locate A Vehicle In Thailand ?

My wife's father guaranteed a loan for his step-sister to purchase an Isuzu Mu-7 a couple years ago, she subsequently left for Norway after re-selling the SUV to someone in the Buriram/Surin area. Now everyone and the SUV have disappeared, and the FIL was killed in a traffic accident a few weeks ago.

The Finance Company is pursuing my FIL's family for payment, as he gave them property to guarantee the loan for his step-sis. This property should be inheritance for the children (my wife, her sis and brother), but the Finance Company has obtained title to it and are going to sell it to clear the debt.

I highly doubt they will search very hard for the SUV, as the property guaranteeing the loan is worth twice the amount owed, so I would simply like to find out how to locate the SUV. I assume that each year new taxes must be paid, insurance etc, so how does one find out where this SUV is?

Maybe we need a Private Investigator or lawyer or something, I am at a loss, but the amount of 340,000 baht they want makes me want to try all we can to locate the SUV, sell it and clear the debt. Help, please!!

Thanks in advance.

Think you have a problem, don't think you have a snow balls chance in hell of finding the car if she sold it to a chop shop. Has she reported it stolen, if so was there any insurance. Sometimes people borrow money off dodgy loan sharks and they may have it. She is the only one that knows what has happened to the car and the bank doesn't care, they just want there money or the car. As you are not the owner you can't report it stolen. Think you either pay up or the family loses the land. A no win situation. If she sold the car as you believe then she is likely to be looking at time in prison, as she did not own it. Jim

A police friend of mine over to drink whiskey said a police officer moonlighting as a PI could find the registration and current owner from the insurance information. A lawyer might help via the police. Find the the SUV fast with a little tea money or pay off the loan or loose the land!

Don't think there would be a current owner as the bank or loan company would not have allowed the sale. Only hope would be if she borrowed money form some one and they have the car, you could pay them the loan and get the car back. If she is not telling the car is gone. Jim

I think you're both right about this, and thank you for the thoughts. My guess is she sold it to someone (am told for 100,000 baht) and they were supposed to assume the payments, but didn't. My wife thinks it has probably been sold to a chop shop or taken over the border to Cambodia and disposed of.

I am encouraging my wife to ask help from the Police Chief that assisted her in the accident causing her father's death, thinking that if anyone could find the SUV, the police could. She is hesitant, but it's a lot of money. A little tea money would be cheaper.

Thanks again for your help, it's pretty much how I thought it would be.

Post the registration Number?

Offer a reward?

That's a good thought Binnsy, but where would I post?? The reward idea could work, though, but again where would people be looking?

I think we're looking at just paying the Finance Company, and just keep our eyes and ears open in the future, as I would assume that after we pay the debt, my wife's family would own the SUV. ??? Just need to find it, if it wasn't sold somewhere in Cambodia.

Thanks, we will do that. Now we're trying to get all the needed info from the Finance Company, who are not too forth-coming with the facts we need...license plate #, reg#, etc., but I am very stubborn and my lovely wife will soon tire of hearing about it from me.
