Latest news for visitors to Penang and beyond.

Three Taiwanese nationals were charged with drugs

trafficking in Kuala Lumpur where the the offence carries the mandatory

death penalty. ( News report today )

Malaysia has executed 229 people (including foreigners)

for the drug offence in the past 30 years.

As the saying/advice goes...... Be careful of what you are

carrying. Mere possession of the drugs could get you the

mandatory death penalty. The onus is on you to prove otherwise.

That is mission impossible.

From the archives:

In 1986, Malaysia executed Australian drug smugglers Kevin Barlow and Brian Chambers by hanging in a high-profile case that sparked a major diplomatic row after then Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke described the death sentence as "barbaric."

The last Australian to be executed in Southeast Asia was Michael McAuliffe, who went to the gallows in Malaysia in 1993 for drug trafficking.

This reminds me of the movie 'Return to Paradise' with Vince Vaughn and Joaquim Phoenix.

Urgh, that movie sucked. I could not wait for them to get hanged.

When I went to KL I did not even bring asprin.

Excellent movie and only one was hanged btw; Mr Phoenix.

Who would want to go to that country anyway? unless for a visa perhaps... :o

Thanks for the heads up, I thought taking illegal drugs to other countries was perfectly legal.

Quote : same laws apply in thailand ?

In Thailand, the death penalty is not mandatory.

I assume they also have " plea bargaining " ( just like

English Jurisprudence )" . If you plead guilty, then you will

be given Permanent Residence in Bangkok Hilton, say 10,

20, 30 years, or life, or as the case may be.

If you do not plead guilty...... then if found guilty, convicted,

then the " firing squad " may be applied. I was told that they

have introduced the " lethal injection " to replace the firing squad.

In Malaysia and Singapore, they sent you to the gallows...........

no plea bargaining for drugs trafficking. Death penalty is mandatory.

Where are all those whiners who were going on about how harsh it was that that Brit had got seven years for pedaling over a hundred pills of X in Thailand? Quiet now, aren't ya? :o

Islam, wow boy that really surprized me, i am shocked :o

I am scared of Islam a lot, but in that case, this has not much to do with Islam.... Singapore is even worse, and is certainly not an islamic country.... Singapore has the highest number of death Penalties in the world / compared to the number of Inhabitants....

Long stint in a Thai Jail - I think most would rather have the death penalty. :o

Well it shouldn't come as a surprise,

the immigration card is clearly marked with the words:

DEATH TO DRUG TRAFFICKERS

They do give fair warning, so if someone is still so stupid as to think to import them,

then Malaysia is doing everyone a favour by removing their DNA from the gene pool!

I remember the first time I went to Malaysia there was a big billboard just outside Georgetown with an honest-to-god giant noose hanging there, swinging in the wind and the notice: Death to Drug Traffickers in Malaysia"

Certainly couldn't miss the meaning. But then, alot of people are greedy and foolish.

Quite a number of years ago, two Hong Kong nationals, were caught, charged, found guilty

of drugs trafficking and subsequently sent to the gallows. The Hong Kong film industry make

a TV series on this case story........ highlighting to the end, showing them being dragged and

crying to the gallows. It was a very sad, frightful, emotional, and touching scenario towards the end.

From that day onwards, KL became a household name in Hong Kong. The latest case are the Taiwanese.

I can only assume that they were not fully aware of the mandatory death penalty.
