Anybody knows what is necessary for a Lao citizen for staying in Thailand for couple of weeks?

I've heard no passport is needed for visits up to 3 days. But for longer visits?

passport and gets 30 days at border or go to Thai embassy in Vientiane and get a 60 day visa currently free

An ID card is only going to get your friend a border pass, good for 3 days.

A full passport will allow 30 days entry.
