Mental Health Department Warns against Politics-related Stress

BANGKOK: -- The Mental Health Department is reminding the public not to get stressed out with the pending endorsement of the MPs-elect, and suggest people should find some relaxing activities to do instead.

Mental Health Department Director-general Thawee Tangseri has urged the public to relax and not to get too stressed by the political climate as endorsement of all of the MPs has not been completed yet.

He said the deadline for the approval is two more weeks away and suggested that people should get involved with hobbies for the time being so that they do not get too stressed by politics.

As for concerns about chaos in the future, Thawee stated that endorsements by the Election Commission will not trigger a political upheaval.

And even if the poll body agrees not to give a green light, it doesn't necessarily mean there will be chaos.

Political obsession is affecting mental health

news2011-07-19_10-06-29_255407190006_MentalHealth.jpg

BANGKOK, 19 July 2011 (NNT) – The Department of Mental Health has suggested people to remain calm upon political news as a lot of them are panicking whether the Election Commission (EC) will certify MP status for key members of two big political parties or not.

Mental Health Department Deputy Director-General Medical Doctor Tawee Tungsaeree stated that people should remain calm while they are waiting for the EC’s decision which is not expected until the beginning of August according to the allowed legal timeframe.

A recent survey by the Assumption University Research Centre (ABAC Poll) showed that the majority of the respondents are not happy with the EC’s delay in endorsing key figures of the Democrat and Pheu Thai parties while some of them become obsessed with the political uncertainty and fear for violence.

Meanwhile, a survey by Suan Dusit Poll of Suan Dusit Rajabhat University reported that Bangkok people are under stress because the political situation after the 3 July general election remains unclear, with no concrete changes.

Medical Doctor Tawee suggested that people should be patient and do some other activities instead of focusing their attention on political news via radio and television or political commentators.

Upon concerns that there might be political violence in the future, the deputy director-general advised people to think positively that violence is unlikely regardless of the decision of the EC as things might not turn negative as expected.

Just wondering whether health insurance will now pay for some meditation courses or anti-stress holidays like a round-the-world trip for people affected by political stress...

At least then the politicians would'nt be the only ones profiting from government money to travel and relax... :D

The stress will lay mainly by the people who were too busy making false accusations with the EC, the foreign ministry, the army and the Thaksin haters I suppose. The rest of the Thai people feel more ore less relieved that the Thai Sun King, Suthep will be demoted.

Agreed. Sadly, many of the most vocal critics seem to already had a few screws loose to begin with.

I thought the recommendation to take up a hobby while things are getting sorted out was very helpful. I've just bought a stamp album.

And where are all these panicking Thais? What do they look like? Do they run around like Corporal Jones or do they do the Thai thing and keep it all bottled up? If so beware of Thais with short fingernails.

Well believe it or not...

Some of the specific interventions are community services, prison services, psychiatric rehabilitation, and use of media in mental health operations. There have been active efforts towards international cooperation for developing technologies for specific programmes. Private and non-governmental organizations are supported and encouraged to provide mental health care to the marginalized sections of society.

Ofcourse - it is probably a rubber room 101 somewhere....

Most of Thailands Mental health is dealt with by Monks at temples... which to be honest, does seem to work quite well...
