I have a Asus P5VD2-VM motherboard with 2 SATA connectors. Can I use one of them to connect a dvd burner?

The Asus manual says that they are for hard disk drives.

Yes- should work OK.

Encouraged by your reply, I bought a new dvd writer (sata). Guess what? BIOS or Windows don't recognize it. Now What?

You should've stuck with IDE for the dvd writer instead of SATA. I prefer IDE over SATA when it comes to optical drives; just bought one the other day...

Try connecting to a different SATA port.

Check your BIOS settings. Is the SATA mode set to SATA-IDE, RAID, or AHCI?

Current day DVDs drives come in IDE and SATA interfaces. If your BIOS does not recognize the SATA DVD, then either the drive is bad or the BIOS/motherboard does not support that particular model....I've also heard of some older motherboard SATA connectors only working with hard drives. Be sure to check your motherboard's support web site for the latest BIOS and other info.

I also looked at the manual online and as you said it only talks hard drives connecting to the SATA connectors. But in one place it also talks about about a PCI Express x1 and External SATA jumper setting. The default setting is for the External SATA connector....if it's been switch then it appears the motherboard may be set to the PCI Express slot.

I'm thinking you need to get a IDE interface DVD to hookup to the internal IDE connectors on the board.

What they said. BTW, have you got the SATA power cable hooked up, and does the drive door open & close OK when you press the button?

I have a couple of SATA DVD drives and have no problem at all.

The manual for that motherboard was published in 2007 so it might be that the mboard just can't handle SATA DVDs.

Yes, this was also my thougts. :( But I'll give it a try at Panthip tomorrow, and maybe they can change something in the BIOS.

Couldn't you take the drive back and ask them to swap it for an IDE model or maybe buy an external case and convert it to a USB drive. Not sure if that would work with your BIOS though.

Another possibility would be an inexpensive external case for the drive, that would have the SATA interface inside, but connect to the PC via USB...? The last on I bought was about 600 THB, and would give you some more flexibility if you have more than one machine by being external / easily connected to USB.
