Screen Lock For Htc Desire

Desire running Android Froyo. Is there either a hardware function on my Desire or software feature In Android to lock the screen when the phone is on?

I know about screen locks on opening or waking a sleeping phone; what I need is to stop apps/screens opening when listening to music or something when the phone is on and in my pocket for example.

Not sure why it is a problem? If you are on a screen with your music player (for example) then simply a quick press of the top power button puts the phone into 'lock-mode' anyway

With certain apps, e.g., Google Listen, if listening to podcasts and one turns off the screen (not the phone) in the manner you describe, the app shuts down. Have also noticed that some apps also shut-down whenever the screen goes off (goes into power saver mode). Some other apps where this occurs are NPR's streaming app and Double-Twist music player. To avoid this, I have set my screen-shutdown to maximum (30 mins) and give it a tap every now and then to keep it from shutting-off.

If there an Android setting (or a customary app setting) to not shutdown running apps when the screen goes off and also a setting to like lock-down the home screen so screens don't shift or apps open when my phone is stuffed into my pockets. Sorta like Nokia phones used to have the Menu-Star button combo to lock the screen to prevent accidental calls being made?
