Phrathat

Featured Replies

What's the stupa/chedi on the hill just west of Don's Cafe called?

The Mrs said "PhraThat" but I suspect that is the local descriptive name for that type of structure.

I thought Wat Phrathat was the one on the hill near the Dusit hotel with views of the Kok. Come to think of it I think I visited a Wat Phrathat at Doi Suthep when I lived in CM. Must be quite a popular temple name if there are more, a bit like Smith, Jones, Khan, Shinawat :)

Phrathat means that a Buddha relic is (supposedly) enshrined there - as in Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, Wat Prathat Doi Khao Quai,

etc etc. So there's more to the name. I've seen it, but can't remember...

Joel is absolutely correct, Phrathat means that the Temple (Wat) contains a buddha relic. If it's of interest Phrabat means that the wat contains a buddha footprint.

Have to admit that they are extraordinarily abundant in this neck of the woods compared to other areas though.

I'm still none the wiser to it's name though, my visitor wants to make a note in his journal after we inspected it last week.

It's certainly a fine example of the species.
