The most sensible option in my opinion would be to raise minimum wage in proportion with inflation. ie if inflation is at 5%, raise minimum wage by 5% and not to the same level across all country but respectively for each province.

One is still left with an inadequate minimum wage. The fact remains that the current minimum wage is inadequate.

Just like any other country in the world.

While the intentions of some people here is noble, many need to try to own and run business in Thailand and i do not mean just internet "i have a business"

I own some hotels, and i can tell you, some people come for job interview in boxer shorts, without a shower, un-brushed hair, dirty cloths etc.

Some staff simply come to work and sit there doing nothing, and when i say nothing i mean NOTHING.

( about the part of the job interview I've seen quite a few times of this as well )

1 housekeeper i had, it took her 6 hours to clean 1 room and mind you she was on double the minimum wage.

( had a similiar experience but let this person go after the first day )

I have written out point by point instructions on what needs to be done daily and still same employees do nothing. Some can not even answer the phone.

And some here believe those should get a pay rise? if anything, their pay should be half.

There is no work ethics in Thailand, no loyalty or desire to succeed especially when it come to unskilled labor.

( I disagree on this issue won't go into a lot of details though but getting people who will be loyal and have desire to work with your company can be done )

Yes, i am sure its my lack of management and whatever else, this is why car sales have no idea what they selling, electronics sales have no idea about the products and every second foreigner and tourist complains about lack of service, all those businesses must be under bad management, because staff are just full of energy/initiative and desire.

I can say i have 5 staff who are excellent in every sense of the word and they do not need to worry about minimum wage because they already get more. while the rest do not even deserve 200 baht per day, if anything they should be charged for the food and drinks they consume-because this is all they do

High expectation?! i do not think so.,i never thought that answering the phone could be a challenge for someone or to turn the lights off/on is a big task.

It's an editorial. It has a political axe to grind. it is impossible to have a functional grasp of English and not notice that.

And again, which parts of the article do you think are wrong? It's just the standard arguments against large wage increases, where's the controversy? The axe would seem to be yours.

There will always be poor no matter what the min. wage

The poor of this world will never benefit by punishing the rich ,its been tried before and always finished up with tens of millions dieing of famine , Stalin and Mao are classic examples of this empty socialist propaganda .

Hey jayboy, what are you going to comment when inflation goes through the roof eroding any gain, other workers demand a higher salary to maintain the difference between labor jobs and professional jobs, and more?

And, by the way, you never recognize that a large percentage of the posters here who dislike the paymasters selfish manipulative circus will quickly and strongly agree that there is a big gap between the rich and the poor and it urgently needs structured attention to lower that gap a lot and attention by gaining a situation whereby a much much larger percentage of the Thai population can have a good quality of life through their own productivity.

So perhaps you'd like to share some details of the specific pt policies aimed at "....quality of life through their own productivity".

The sad part is the people who want this huge raise could care less that the cost of living will also go up for those who do not for one reason or another have access to a pay check. They are just over flowing with the milk of human kindness.

I guess I had best spell it out for them if left to do it themselves thy will not get there.

1 Old people who can no longer work

2 Severely handicapped people

3 People who are mentally challenged

4 People who through circumstances of education location of up bringing or other reasons have no skills what so ever.

And yes there are job out there for them but not near enough.

5 I am sure there are more but condemning just these four groups to a harder life than they all ready have is a cruel and

heartless thing to do.

I am wondering about his business. On another thread he claimed to have just 21 employes now he has more than one hotel and claims he needs only needs 7 to run it all.

Western or Thai managerial skills make no difference I would suggest he take a course in management. Must be pretty high room rates to support that kind of staff.

Yeah I get your message,very loud and very clear, to your staff who you appear to treat well and pay them what they deserve you are an "employer" whilst the slackers who in reality do not deserve to be paid in "washers" you are somehow "exploiting " them, seen this the world over for the last 40years , this was the problem with left wing unions in the UK in the late 70s were slackers and good workers were treated just the same as long as they paid their union dues every week ,and their employers could not fire them without causing major industrial strikes , resulting in confidence In our manufacturing base sinking to an all time low in the "winter of discontent" in the late 70's.

I did read somewhere about one employer who has said that he currently employs 4 people, each at 150 baht per day. If he has to pay 300 baht per day, he will sack 2 employees and get the remaining 2 to work longer hours. It will not, therefore cost him any more, but 2 people will be out of work.

There are some similarities I agree but also some differences.One key difference is they were voted in by the Thai majority and are not dependent or bound to feudalists, a corrupt military and old fashioned monopoly capitalists.

They were voted in by a minority of voters. And PTP epitomizes feudalism in Thailand. Most of their seats have been ruled the same feudal families for generations. There was no revolution in Isaan, they are electing the same corrupt and old fashioned leaders today that they elected 30 years ago. The 'revolution' was buying them all and forming them in to a single political block. And their leader is a monopoly capitalist to the core

I think the minimum wage should be raised. However the 300 baht per day was nothing but an empty promise in order to win votes in the handful of competitive constituencies. They are not going to do it, and there won't even be a backlash from red shirts

I agree whole heatedly with your statement on feudalism. For all their talk of being for the poor they make sure that no poor person gets elected.

Al the elections in Thailand do is elect a one set of elites from many sets of elites. This new set of elites didn't think it through. They forgot that there in the street army had made it so that a election promise was expected to be delivered. They thought they could just talk and let it go as in past elections.

Absolutely, Shin Corp & the Isaan rice-milling middle-men were always noted, for over-paying their staff & suppliers, that's why there are no poor farmers or employees here in Thailand these days. :lol:

As to the minimum wage as I have pointed out already the financial brains behind the Democrat government, Khun Korn, is entirely in agreement with the concept.So far no comment on this from the sceptics.I am tempted to say this doesn't fit in with their ideas so just ignore it.

Personally i do not see the difference who came up with the idea PTP, KGB, FBI CIA or anyone else.

My only concern is a jump to 300 baht, for some provinces its almost double.

If as an employer i was to get something back, sure make it 500 per day, but just pay higher minimum wage and receive same result really does not make much sense, not to mention really does not help developing 3rd world country who is competing against others in the region.

Do you really think the giants will stick around if their costs will sky rocket? the moment the cost of doing business becomes more than the cost of moving, they will be gone in a week leaving thousands unemployed.

Our company stuck the pay up for the few relevant staff already - before the election infact as it was obvious it was coming and keeping staff morale high was important. It seems they did the right thing to me and it wont be passed on to customers as it just knocks a small amount off of profit.

Edited to add: our company isnt a slave labour intensive one but relies mostly on highly paid professionals and makes a reasonable but not inflated profit every year

small? say if you have 10 staff on minimum wage, thats an extra 1000 per day.

have a few uni graduates thats another 10000-20000 per month

If you also have a few who are above the minimum wage, also would need to put up their wage.so the extra cost could easily be up to 100 000 baht per month for a medium size business

If the controversial pledge was made after a thorough study with sincerity to up the living standard of Thais, there should not be any worry. That Pheu Thai seems to be backtracking daily suggests that was not the case.

I think this says it all.  The proposal was made to attract as many votes as possible, without any thought into how it could be implemented.  Typical Thai thinking.

While Korn agreed with the end-rate, I think he & the Dems had thought/promised it should take a couple-of-years to reach 300B, rather than the immediate/national implementation to which PTP are committed ? That makes more sense IMO. It allows more time for employers to adjust prices & staffing-levels & productivity to cope with the sudden increase in labour-costs.

Personally I would also suggest that a phased-narrowing, of the differences between rates in different provinces, might be a less-damaging way to reach the longer-term objective of a proper universal national minimum-wage. This might yet be what happens, once Ms Yingluck forms her government, hopefully soon. B)

I appreciate we have gone over this ground, but i still struggle with the idea that the member who expressed nothing but uncertainty about what the election result would be prior to it occuring, now speaks with such certainty about what he knew was going to happen.

And as for you knowing also with the same certainty that this policy would be implemented, have you read the OP to this thread? Have you also read PT's announcements on this policy since they won? And you still think it's a foregone that they'll honour the promise?

Your wasting your time jayboy knows they were voted in by a minority. But that is a fact that does not fit in with his ideas so just change it.

You are correct, and I apologise for the error.

What of course I meant to say is that the PTP won a very clear election victory and as such has a mandate from the Thai people.

As to the minimum wage as I have pointed out already the financial brains behind the Democrat government, Khun Korn, is entirely in agreement with the concept.So far no comment on this from the sceptics.I am tempted to say this doesn't fit in with their ideas so just ignore it.

You are still incorrect there was a clear mandate that the people did not want the PT. I would say 52% is a clear mandate and it would do Yingluck good to recognize that fact. If she is honest she will have a better chance of succeeding.

While he may agree with a concept that does not make it practical. In order to implement it they will have to rewrite their election promise. I know this and I would hope you do.

While Korn agreed with the end-rate, I think he & the Dems had thought/promised it should take a couple-of-years to reach 300B, rather than the immediate/national implementation to which PTP are committed ? That makes more sense IMO. It allows more time for employers to adjust prices & staffing-levels & productivity to cope with the sudden increase in labour-costs.

Personally I would also suggest that a phased-narrowing, of the differences between rates in different provinces, might be a less-damaging way to reach the longer-term objective of a proper universal national minimum-wage. This might yet be what happens, once Ms Yingluck forms her government, hopefully soon. B)

I think that's a sensible comment.As I earlier noted it is prudent for any incoming government to review the practical details of election pledges.

One aspect that hasn't been much touched on is the need for Thailand to move its economy into further value added.Actually Thailand has rather a good record of success here over the last 40 years but the continuing danger is that the country ends up competing with low wages - a battle a country like Thailand can never win.Some decades ago Lee Kwan Yew hiked the minimum wage rate in Singapore precisely for this reason,with the results now all can see now.Obviously this must go hand in hand with educational reform, particularly in the field of technical training.To those who say this is just a pipe dream consider the prowess and intelligence of the Thai people: many highly sophisticated manafacturing operations are serviced by a very skilled work force whose family background is that of rice farming.
