Featured Replies

Hi was woundering is there a train to chaing Rai?

I am thinking of going there for the long weekend?

or any ideas how to get there, besides flying

tks

Unfortunately, no train service from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. Here is a link to the map on seat61.com which is one of the best reference sites for train trade in Thailand ... and many other places as well.

thx for the info, i like the map details will use it for sure along with busses

While extending a new line from Den Chai or Lampang to Chiang Rai was an old idea re-floated pre-election, it has yet to be built, so you're stuck with train to Den Chai or Lampang or Chiang Mai (end-of-the-line) and then bus to Chiang Rai.

NakhornChaiAir does overnight-buses from Bangkok to Chiang Rai & Mae Sai (Burmese border), if that helps ? And I would suggest allowing longer than a week-end, perhaps a week to see Chiang-Rai, Mae-Salong, Mae-Sai/Tachilek, the 'Golden-Triangle' and Chiang-Sen, if you have time ? B)

Also double-check that service is running. At this time of year service is often interrupted due to flooding. Just this past week service to the north was curtailed for ~ 5 days due to severe flooding in Phrae (specifically tracks washed out near Ban Pin). The first train through was the #13 Friday PM. Obviously the trains are sold out for a few days dealing with the back-up. These trains also run behind schedule, ~ 2+ hours end-to-end, and there is no way to pass trains which have broken down. I guess my point is that the train is interesting, and great if you are not time-constrained. Thai's who use the train often have various expressions for the lack of punctuality for Thai trains.
