Gmail Upload Stuck, Explanation ?

there must be an explanation. While everything is running normal within the usual speed swings , how can it technically be that e.g. a 1 liner email send out via Gmail takes 30 sec before is goes finally out , with the message showing after some 20 seconds, STILL WORKING .

I use the 1 liner because it shows that the mail data quantity is irrelevant.

The worst is when I use the spell check (US English, so there ought to be no bias ), often is fails completely)

Also I can't detect any pattern regarding low/high traffic times.

The explanation is that Gmail is a web based email client and as such is dependent upon the quality and speed of your Internet connection

What you describe fit the parameters of a poor connection and your Gmail experience could be duplicated using any web based email client, such as Hotmail or Yahoo Mail

You're using the gmail website and it is taking that long to load? If that is the case I would assume there may be a problem with Java. May want to try a re-install of your Java client.
