MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- An explosive device detonated in one of Mexico's largest private universities, injuring at least two people, officials said Monday.

The incident occurred at the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, at its Atizapan de Zaragoza, State of Mexico campus. State Attorney General Alfredo Castillo Cervantes confirmed that the package was found at a garden inside the campus and had the name of robotics professor Alejandro Aceves Lopez written on it. It was then taken to the professor and exploded after he opened it.

According to official reports, the explosion detonated at around 10 a.m. local time and caused several injuries to Aceves Lopez's chest. The explosion also injured another university professor, Armando Herrera Corral, who suffered injuries to his feet.

Casitllo Cervantes said the package contained a homemade explosive device, but investigations were ongoing, as it is still uncertain whether the attack was carried out by a criminal group or an individual.

University Director Pedro Grasa Soler described the attack as an "isolated incident" that had never occurred in the university's history. He said that the university would increase its security measures, but underlined that the investigation of the incident relies on local authorities. He also noted that both of the injured were hospitalized but reported in stable condition.

The university evacuated the campus and canceled all afternoon classes, while investigations continue.
