I had the same thing done in Colorado a few years back when I was visiting there. In and out with in 4 hours too keep the cost down. I paid just under $3000 and must say I truly do not feel 100% since.

I have had a back surgery here in Thailand as well as other sergery. Always only got 1 hospital bill that included the surgen (who was schooled in my home town) And never was it over 2000 Bt. Some times even a few hundred baht.

Wishes for a speedy recovery, I know it can take month and you will really want to go out and do things again

If you had an orthopedic specialist operate on your back for 2,000 baht, I'd certainly be interested to know who he/she is.

I had an orthopedic surgeon operate on two toes and his fee alone was 18,000 baht. I've already said Trichak'e fee to remove the gallbladder, was 10,500 (5 years ago) and prostate surgery done transurethrally was 45,000 Baht of which 14,000 was the surgeon's.

I did have a mole removed for biopsy (5 minute job) for Dr Siri's fee of 1,600 Baht. These were all done in Chiang Mai (none at Ram)

Edit: I've just looked - correction, the orthopod's fee was 16,000 Baht.

If you had an orthopedic specialist operate on your back for 2,000 baht, I'd certainly be interested to know who he/she is.

Yahnee is mostly known for it's bargain priced cosmetic surgery. However, I notice they do a knee replacement and hip replacement starting at $7,000 US, but I can't see anything to suggest you could get an orthpod do back surgery for $66 US, you really must be lucky!

a word of thanks which is needed for all those who are professional in what they do is all it takes to make everyone feel good about what they do - furthermore when i was asked to give the bill i did exactly as typed so if there is a typing error by the accounts dept - ?????? the bill total is correct and i paid it.

Then they made a mistake. No surgeon is going to operate on you for 1950 Baht! Do you know any surgeons in Thailand personally? I do, and they drive Mercedes Benz, live in fabulous homes, and own a couple of sets of Titleist golf clubs. They don't live that way by cutting people open for 1950 Baht!

Rubish electrified...I was operated on at SuanDork for two broken fingers and the surgeon charged 300 baht and the specialist anaesthetician who they called in as I have a serious medical condition cost 1000.

Well if you want another one............I couldnt walk for 100m or stand for 2 or 3 minutes last year without being in horrendous pain. I spent 4 months trying to find an answer and eventually I found Dr. Sudhee who told me that I had broken a vertebrae more than 40 years ago. He performed 2 operations on my spine and yesterday I passed my industry medical which I have to take in Singapore. The old Chinese doctor which I normally see for my medicals down there was very complimentary at the job that was done. I credit this surgeon for allowing me to walk again and you definitely cannot put a price on that! Dr. Sudhee used to work and teach at the Ram before he retired from there so that is where the operation took place. The nursing care in there I thought was brilliant.

Yes he did but then again the first operation took 7 hours and the second 4 hours and who do you want cutting bits out of your spine? I will pay for the man with the training and a lifetimes experience. He charges 500B for a consultation at his clinic which I think is a pretty standard fee. The second operation he waived his fee. At one time I could not even sit, after 30 seconds it was too painful so I spent a month lying on a couch. Helped improve my life is something of an understatement. Its taken 6 months to allow bones to fuse but now its time to go back to work!

Just to add to the confusion about hospital costs. About a month ago I asked Dr. Trichek Sandhu the cost of a Cholecystectomy (keyhole removal of gallbladder). As usual this question causes doubt and consternation but after a huddled consultation with the attendant nurse he came up with "about 60,000baht". I took a few weeks to finally decide to have it done and returned to complete the paperwork. The nurse with the pen asked me what the Doctor had said about the price. I said 60,000. When she presented me with the papers to sign she had written 70,000+. When I queried this she just kept saying 70,000 and emphasising the + by repeatedly raising her slender,manicured hands slowly upwards.Ever so many times.+++ to make sue I got the message ; 70,000's just a starting point.

I signed but after a day or two cancelled the op. as I got increasingly annoyed about these financial shenanigans. She couldn't even tell me if this included one night's stay in the hospital.

70,000+ could easily amount to 80,000 or 90,000. Anyone's guess. Very unsatisfactory.

One year ago, I had a quote fom Dr. Ekachai Paiboonworachat at RAM for the same op and he came staight out with 80,000baht including a night or two in hospital.

I shouldn't be too hasty cancelling your insurance.You just never know. These things happen out of the blue.

Your quote with Sandhu sounds about right, as you will read from my earlier post that I paid 45,000 5 years ago for the same surgery by him. The point is, surgeons do not perform surgery for a few hundred baht and as Elektrified has pointed out they live in very fine houses, drive top of the range cars etc, which wouldn't be possible if they didn't charge 'going' rates.

By the way Uptheos I think my 7 hour spine surgery surgeons fee and the follow up cost 50k, Titanium 50k and everything and everyone else 50k. I have no idea what house he lives in but he drives an Accord and his wife drives a Vigo. I agree with you about the costing of a surgeon. A lifetimes training and experience does not come ''cheap'' which itself of course is relative. The elderly Chinese doctor who I saw in Singapore the day before yesterday had just had basically the same operation. His was done using the latest robotics and minimum invasion techniques. That cost about 850k Baht. I think anyone in the US or the UK would consider the prices you and I are talking about as ''good value!''

I've had a long history with Maharaj hospital (then that's what it was.. state run. Now it separated into two sections, state and private). Sriphat is a new privately run department of the Chiang Mai University.

I was born at this hospital. Didn't remember anything about this hospital.

But four years ago I tore my right latissimus dorsi muscle from my stupidity (excessive weight doing deadlifts). But the doctors there were very friendly and very professional. Even though it was their first time independently operating this part of the muscle, I didn't have any problem. Recovered just fine. Before the operation, they honestly responded to my parents that it's their first time and if they weren't comfortable with this they'd be okay for me to transfer to other hospitals but they were sure that it wasn't anything complex.

A friend of my mother who is a nurse at Maharaj Hospital also said that most top graduates who are specialists (Ph.D.) if they decide to stay in Chiang Mai, they would work either at this place or Ram. I guess I think I know where to go for emergency if something happens to my family the next time.

Well, I'm not too sure where you would go in an emergency but I'm quite sure I know where I would go ; RAM without a doubt. I turned up at Maharaj Emergency Dept about one year ago with excruciating pain in my abdomen and after hours of inefficient, uncaring, and ignorant attendance by the on-duty staff I was told I really shouldn't be there ; I wasn't an emergency and all I had was wind. They sent me packing and as I painfully wended my way home , having to stop three times due to the pain, I determined to go to RAM the next morning.

At RAM I was quickly diagnosed with an inflamed, infected gallbladder and immedietely admitted to hospital that same day. They said , had I not been taking aspirin, they would have operated the same day, as this condition can lead to serious complications. As it was , I was cured during three days stay, with the appropriate drips and drugs and caring attendence.

Incompetent, inexperienced, young medics are not my idea of emergency care but I fear that's where you'e likely to find their highest concentration.

In an emergency such as yours I'd opt for the hospital I thought I could easily be understood - probably RAM.

Back surgery is one of the most specialized and critical procedures and requires a very skilled surgeon. One slip of the knife (or saw, hammer, etc.) and presto - you are a paraplegic or quadriplegic. If an orthopedic surgeon told me he/she was going to operate on my back for 46 Euros I would make a run for the door!
