Well in my Dac search I came across this thread over on headfi.org.

As many veteran Mac iTunes streamers know, iTunes does not adjust sample rates on the fly. You set it in utilities/audi MIdi Setup and then relaunch iTunes. A major pain, especially if you are at all interested in higher resolution files. There's some pretty expensive software out there that deals with this and more, but they are far from seamless and often a bit buggy--at least for me.

Well, there's a new app for $4.99 on the App store called Bitperfect that just got released. It not only solves this problem, but inso doing also improves the sound quality coming out of iTunes. It basically takes complete control of playback and bypasses iTunes. It also plays FLAC files no problem. So you have all the ease of iTunes management and this little utility operating in the background that takes care of the playback. Working pretty well so far, especially for $5.

No relation to the developer, but I did test some of the betas before he went live on the App Store.
